I like the Ultimak gas tube mount better than anything else I have seen so far for mounting pic-rail optics on an AK. Mine was way too nose heavy though, carrying my Aimpoint ML2 pictured below (adding the flashlight didn't help either.....) The Ultimak is a quality-made item, but the design inherently leads to off-balancing the gun.

I then tried the same scope on the BP-02 receiver side-rail mount, which was better centered but even more overall weight and hugely clunky handling-wise

I'm now considering a second attempt at opticizing this Arsenal SLR-106FR with some kind of "micro" red dot, again on an Ultimak. I know Aimpoint has a scaled down model now, and there is something else called "The Doctor"??? What else falls in this category?

Just fishing around here for what anyone might recommend. Would like to be as lightweight and compact as possible, but also rugged enough for a little knocking around. Would also greatly like to co-witness.

Since this will be on an Ultimak, an added consideration is the ability to withstand the extreme heat that the item will be directly subjected to coming off the gas tube (my other main complaint with the Ultimak set-up).

Thanks for any steers, either toward or away.

The Aimpoint H1 and T1 fit nicely (small and light) and you can run it closer the receiver, BUT it doesn't co-witness with the OEM mount nor the LaRue, the LaRue mount is actually a tad taller.

Actually the Aimpoint Micro T-1 does co-witness with the factory mount on an UltiMAK.

This is the optic to beat for a Kalashnikov variant and an UltiMAK mount.

That micro Aimpoint is some high-dollar, but looks pretty darned good.

I stumbled across the deal of a lifetime when I bought my ML2 used from someone off TOS. Maybe I'll score a second run on a micro. Shall start looking now.

Just also found a couple products by Nikko Stirling. Anyone using one of these?

Strange, mine wouldn't with the stock mount. My stuff is never 'just right', I break the supposed unbreakable, stuff shoots loose when it's not suppose to etc.

I guess it's the old firefighter in me................the old saying goes that you can lock a firefighter in an empty room with two bowling balls and come back an hour later and the firefighter will have lost one bowling ball and will have broken the other one.

I thought was Marines? :D

I bought my Aimpoint Micro T-1 from Grant last week and it co-witnesses beautifully on the UltiMAK mount. It's pretty obvious that the LT mount would raise it just above co-witness height.

Personally, I think co-witness with an AK is an overblown concept. It takes a lot of effort to achieve it but if using an Aimpoint really you have a sighting system just barely less reliable than the irons.

I predict in two years time we will be seeing the Micro T-1 on everything.
