I'm sure this has been covered here but the search is not working for me for some reason, anyways I'm thinking about sending my barrel to ADCO and and doing this.
My question is,does this cause any problems with a midlength gas system and what are some good fh suggestions I was thinking about running a smith vortex but I am always up for suggestions. Also, can this screw up the chrome lining in the barrel and are there any advantages besides cutting some weight and being more manuverable?
Thanks in advance guys as always
They will adjust the port so that it runs right. Main advantage is balance and length.
It Wont harm the chrome lining. IINM, a 16 middy barrel cut down to 14.5 will run with the port as is.
What's your reason behind wanting it cut down? With a 2.1" FH welded on, youre only saving ~1.5". Not worth the trouble and consequencial limitations of having a welded FH IMHO. If you want to cut weight, you could have it turned down to a lighter profile. If this is your first carbine, I would stick with the 16, shoot it, and then decide on a 14.5 middy upper in the config you later come to find you need.

What are the limitations? I considered having the barrel shaved to a smaller profile but was thinking about trying this first,I was also thinking about switching rails to cut some weight as well. The reason for this is I saw a 14.5 with a perm flash hider and liked the weight and look of it. This is my 4th ar that I have put together and figured I try something new. I don't want to deal with NFA stuff and I figured this is as close as I can get with out uncle sam getting involved
If you were going to mount a can it would make sense for balance, but since you live in AZ you should just register an 11.5 and be done with it.

Well I was also looking into that as well. I need to do more research the class 3 before I take that step but again I don't know I I want to go through the hassle
Have you read any of the NFA stickies? There really is no hassle, unless you create one.
1. Get documentation (Form 1 if building, pictures, fingerprints, etc..)
or you can go the trust route which is rather simple and negates CLEO nonsense.
2. Plan out your build and when you have barrel length and everything see step 3.
3. Fill out paperwork and send to NFA branch along with your payment.
3. Continue to shoot your AR while you await approval (around 3-4 months maybe faster).
4. Once you are approved you seek out a competent person to help you realize your SBR dream or purchase something off the shelf.
Pretty simple and not really a hassle. Unless of course you have no patience and don't want to wait.

John. PM me. I'm waiting on my stamp for a can and have a guy who is really cool that will help with the paperwork. It's really not hard at all and the guy isn't too far from your place.

Now that Noveske, Centurion Arms, DD, BCM, etc. are all making 14.5 middies there is no reason to cut a barrel. Pull it sell it and put a factory 14.5 middie in your gun its better and cheaper.
