View Full Version : Daniel Defense RIS II rail alignment with barrel...help?

This weekend I wanted to remove the M203 hangers from my Daniel Defense RIS II rail, so I removed the rail and have reinstalled it, but now it appears that the barrel is canted slightly to the left, or the rail to the right.
I have measured the distance between the barrel and the rail on the left and right sides, and it is slightly off, by tenths of a mm.
I used an adm recon mount to align the receiver with the rail when reinstalling, so that should not.be an issue.
My question is that slight misalignment normal? Or have I reinstalled the rail incorrectly? I don't remember if it was like that before, as I never thought to check the factories work.
Thanks for any input
You reinstalled it incorrectly.
You have to align the rail as you tighten the screws.
I've had better luck using a mount or a clamp to get close, then making slight adjustments by eyeball. I then lay the rail on a flat surface, ie glass or a mirror, to make sure the rail and the upper make even points of contact for the full length of the top rail.
Just pull it and put it back on, its not a big deal.

So using the recon mount to bridge the rail to the upper receiver to make sure they line up is incorrect? Or was something else done wrong?
I thought it was just one side being tighter than the other, then I read another thread which said that you can bend the locking nut by over tightening, which can cause the rail to lean to one side. It is the smallest of margins, but it bothers me, especially if its incorrect

+1 on laying on a glass top. I also agree on eyeballing it. Clamps and mounts make installation easier and get you close enough, not guarantee perfect alignment.
That said, I would simply loosen some and adjust from where you are. No need to completely pull the rail, at least from my experience.

I loosened all the screws, and reinstalled the rail.
I tried the flat surface method, but found it easier using the mount. The rail and receiver look spot on.
In person it still appears slightly canted to the left. At this point I am finding it difficult to tell if it is or not. Depending on where your eye is it looks on, or it may not.

This photo looks on, but the center of the camera is slightly to the right.

It sure looks straight in that bottom pic..
You're GTG. It looks perfectly dead-on to me. The bottom pic confirms that.
Light and shadow can play mean tricks on our eyes when we're obsessing over something. The first photo makes it look a tad canted to the right, while the second, to the left.

It looks good to me. Always use a direct, broad light source when looking to see if something is straight. The slightest shadowing from an angle will throw you off. The first pic looked canted to me when I first looked at it. I'm sure that was due to the shadow..
Put a front sight on the rail. If its canted, you'll notice due to the height of the front sight.
I also think you can tell more by looking at where the rail meets the upper.
The only receiver I've had mate PERFECTLY to the DD RIS-II was a Vltor MUR. All others were slightly off. If there is any step between the upper and rail, make sure the same steps exist on both sides of the receiver. IE, if you notice a slight step when looking down the right side of the upper & rail, make sure the same amount of step is visible on the left side.

Mine has a slight gap and a very small step as well. The RIS II is currently my choice in rails. I have a 12" coming soon and I wish they were making the 11" version.
