View Full Version : Low flying AC-130
The plane kept circling the beach so I went out to have a look, at higher altitudes it looked like a C-130, when it dropped lower I could see the extra domes and bulges for its sensor suite and the 105mm howitzer and 40mm Bofors

There were low flying F-16s in formations as well. My naive neighbor thought they were patrolling lol. Don't ask me why a gunship, packing so much firepower for ground targets, would be patrolling Malibu :sarcastic:
Awesome sight all the same... Every time you see one, you just know that some ground target is gonna get pummeled...
That is a cool looking pic.
What kind of camera did you use?
If I see them today I'll take more pics. There's a naval base 40 miles north of where I live, we see Blackhawks, Chinooks, Cobras often, but they are Marines or Navy aircraft.
Yesterday was the first time I saw Air Force birds buzzing us. Most people around here don't know what an AC-130 is, and its role in the war on terror.
The camera is a Canon EOS Rebel XS, with a 55-250 zoom lens :)
Great pic pal, I bet the Vietcong and NVA hated Spooky worse than the current enemy under the "War on Terror".
Probably, but back then the sensors and detection technology weren't as advanced then, I'd say they're more deadly now than ever :D
Spooky is my favorite plane. Being a guy who likes new technology, a prop driven ground pounder like Spooky is kind of an irony. Thanks for sharing the pic Duffy.
There's tons of technology on it :D

awsome picture!!! reminds me of some close airstrikes in afgh.

Very true! Targeting technology is modern. Modern technology to fire a WWII Bofers gun on a prop plane...... Love it!

you should tell your neighbor that the AC deploys invisible chem trails!
i live near the Sikorsky and Pratt plants, a friend who lives about 10 miles from Sikorsky always sees Blackhawks, his neighbor says that they are target marking and running chem trails!
He's a lawyer, probably has no understanding or appreciation of war machines.
I should add that Spooky is surprisingly quiet, as close as it was, one would expect it was flying much higher.
Them F-16s though, ear splitting :p

when i was in high school, our rotc unit visited homestead arb and patrick afb every year.....i never missed a trip! we got to watch a pair of vipers launch from about 20 yards off the end of the runway. They rock!
Amazing sight!
Amazing machine =]
A few days ago the news media was saying the Govt had a "credible threat to Security on or around 9/11" didn't say where in the country. Possibly had to do with that?
Around Malibu? Probably not :p
But then I really don't know, I can't imagine the use of a gunship on US soil though

it was probably heading up to the tony stark mansion a little ways up from you for some sort of flyover escort.
Love those spookys!
And Warthogs too.
I met Bob (Jr. and Sr) years ago, not sure if they still live in Malibu :)

I believe that one has the bushmaster cannon on it.
It was reported that they were going to replace the bofers because parts were getting hard to find.
30mm belt fed, faster ROF vs. 40mm clip fed, slower ROF...tough choices :D

Training
My girlfriend said she read about it, the gunship was there to escort planes at LAX because someone made too many trips in the airport and was thought suspicious lol :suicide2:
