View Full Version : Stovepipe malfunction turned into a double feed?
It went like this bang bang..stopped.
I saw the stove pipe so I racked the charging handle back. The bolt only went back half way. I looked into the chamber and I saw a double feed. I ripped the mag out and rack rack.. Put the mag back in. Racked it again and everything was good after that.
So what the hell happened? Did I mess up on clearing the stovepipe? If so, what was the correct way to clear it?

Failure to eject and double feed are not the same thing.
Sounds like a typical jam. It's likely that the next round up was hindered by the stove piped round.
Probably no big deal unless it happens again. Then it may be time to try either a different mag or different ammo.
The double feed happend when I tried to clear the FTE.

I was using Pmag and federal XM193. Yeah..I'll chalk it up to a fluke or break in period. The rifle was brand new.

Always pull the bolt all the way to the rear before you release it.

Two live rounds? The bolt picked up a new round and fed it part way when you had the FTE, then you racked it and picked up a second round.
My guess is when he tried to clear the stovepipe, the casing fell back into the receiver and caused an in-line stovepipe. The new round was partially in the chamber, stovepiped casing fell back in, and as the bolt went back forward it pushed the new round into the chamber while simultaneously driving the empty casing forward. Not really a double feed per se, it would seem.
.
I think there might be some terminology problems.
I might be wrong but this is my simplistic understanding of malfs:
Stovepipe - Round 1/2 way out of action & caught by the slide (bolt) on way out of action? I have never seen a stovepipe in an AR w/o something blocking Ejection Port?
Double Feed - 2 live rounds in the action trying to load into the chamber? Usually a Mag problem.
FTEj - Fired casing in action, not ejected from action. Could be one or two rounds (1 live and 1 fired) in action?
FTEx - Fired round in chamber with the silde (bolt) rearward?
Please correct me if I am wrong.
.
To clarify was it two live rounds mimicking the three stooges going through a door (both squeezing into same path, not inline), one live round in chamber and another following, or one live round and the spent case jamming up? If it was the first and a double feed double feed then its ammo, magazine lips, or other typical double feed issues and the stovepipe likely just proceeded it. If its the second my guess is that it started to feed a live round into the chamber when the spent round stove piped stopping the bolt from its natural path where after clearing the stovepipe the bolt stripped another round and fed it behind the partially fed round. If its the third then the bolt started to feed another round and the spent round wasn't properly cleared and fell back in.

Keep an eye on it but I general don't count the first several hundred rounds for anything but break in.
