there are some mags that should work. and the franken mags can still be made so the mag issue is not what it was.
yes-colt built a few 7.62's
colt did build a few rifles in 7.62x39 and colt also made 20rd mags. from all accounts i have seen they are very good rifles. but they would be more of a collectors type of thing.
several kit makers make kits and uppers in 7.62 some of them being great and others just so-so.
i am looking to build a rifle with a m-4 profile barrel or CAR barrel as a project.
i don't think this is going to be that difficult. i do suspect that there can be some pit falls esp in the bolt and firing pin areas of the build up.
some eastern ammo has deeper primer pockets than the west would consider standard. i was wondering if anyone had problems with light primer strikes or other bolt/firing pin related issues?
i think i am going to run the DPMS bolt&carrier. i may have to rummage through my parts bins to find a buffer of the right weight. this weapon will have the 6-position carbine stock. if someone has some experience with the round in a carbine length it might save some experimenting with the buffers.
i have also considered an adjustable gas system. the goal is to get the 7.62 to run with AK like reliability with a wide batch of bullet weights--that is with a clean rifle. LOL- some of the bullets are going to weigh in around 240g+ and some are going to hit the scales at only 100g--
it would be nice if the rifle could share some parts with either 6.5g or 6.8 builds--
i will look into the armalite upper!!!
that armalite upper sounds like it could work out well.
only thing is that c-products is 3-4weeks backorder.
i have heard that some of the thermolds and some of the other plastic mags work. but i haven't tried them myself--the frankenmags work well. but you have to use an ar top on a ak or sks middle-bottom section. so this requires you to hack up two mags to make one--so the c-product mag would be less expensive than that solution.
i have seen a few people who claimed that some of the off brands can be made to work. there is even a stainless 30rd on one site (not made the same as the C) but i haven't found a sole that has bought that mag and tested it yet.
