What about dumbest things seen at the gun range?
Saw a guy setup a few benches down from me at the range the other day. Probably mid-50s, looked like he was dress for golf.
First, his AR15 was literally out of the box. I mean, that's how he brought it to the range. When he set up at the table, he had to remove the plastic from the magazine and rifle, and cut off the hang tags from the trigger guard.
Then, he takes two low profile weaver rings, and wrenches on his Nikon scope to the handguard. It was so far forward that the rear of the scope was barely reaching the ejection port and this was a standard eye relief scope. So he begins shooting his Tula .223, and it immediately jams. First round. This is a good thing, because in order to see through his scope he has to perform some pretty interesting neck/body rotation and I'm certain his round was nowhere close to the berm.
He has no idea how to clear the jam. He's fiddling with the bolt release button, when finally a RO (who are actually decent dudes at this place) comes over and gives him some instruction to clear the malfunction. Next round jams again. I was resisting the urge to go over and help the guy. I've learned over the years that older, wealthier guys who enjoy shooting are generally dickheads and unreceptive to any advice whatsoever - especially when it comes from a young hoodlum.
About that time I started packing up and headed inside to take care of a few things. He came in with one of the ROs and asked another guy to look at his rifle. I stood by, just watching as they lubed his rifle up a bit. I finally decided to give him a suggestion and mentioned getting a cantilever scope mount for his rifle as there was no way he could have proper eye relief given the scope's location and mounting to the receiver is a more secure platform.
Dude: "A canti-what? Son, look. I know about firearms. This is a top of the line Nikon scope. Navy SEALs used this specific model when they shot Bin Laden. I'm a professional, not here because I'm a little kid playing GI Joe. This scope mount is low so I don't get shot in the head when I'm assaulting compounds."
In unison, three ROs, myself, and another guy nearby just began laughing our asses off while he grabbed his rifle and left.
Never give advice to older, mid-life crisis guys. They know everything! :sarcastic:
Euro, I spilled my coffee laughing so hard.
Not a "dumbest" story, but I took my wife to a couple of LGSs over the weekend so she could look at pistols. Our experience with store #1 was kind of sad. They had a grand total of 3 pistols behind the counter. Yep, 3. No revolvers. This is a store which advertises regularly having "100s of guns in stock". Long gun shelves were pretty bare too. Despite being openly disappointed, my wife looked at what he had, and asked some very good questions. Store employee was an older gentleman who who was courteous, but not really interested in making a sale. OK, duly noted, not going back there. Store #2 is a custom shop across town that also keeps a decent offering. They had literally dozens of pistols, and even swapped a couple of grips out for her to try while we were looking at other handguns. We had a great experience looking at guns with the owner and his wife, and my wife fell in love with a Springfield 1911. They even threw in some ammo on the house, and offered a free range session for her while she waits for the CA-mandated waiting period to expire.
