I carry two. First is an Emerson M-wave. Second is an Emerson SOCFK. Previous to the M-wave I carried a Spyderco Civilian. Pryer to the SOCFK I carried a Benchmade auto (Stryker I think).

On duty:
SOCFK or SMF, and
a TDI (small size)
I've been carrying this Benchmade literally every day for about 12 years or so. Once or twice a year I clean out the dust and tighten it up.

It's lightweight, flat, easy to carry, holds a very nice edge, and has cut, hacked or sawn open thousands of things over the years. I got it on sale somewhere, and it's probably the best $35 I ever spent. :)

I have also heard some disappointing reviews and personal complaints about the Benchamde Infidel. Anyone have any experience with it?

Various Spydercos...Endura, Delica, Tasman, Rescue, others.
All eminently functional for EDC tasks required. All inexpensive enough that there's no hardship if they are lost or have to be ditched.

My current collection of pocket items. What I carry depends on the situation. The small Strider is legal in most places. I like the clip on the Surefire better than the others.
I think in addition to what I am looking for, I am going to have buy a BM Skirmish. I love those.
