How many lumens is too much for a bump in the night light?

I'm needing to get a light to go alongside my bedside gun and at first was wanting to get the brightest light I could but then saw something about a super bright light being able to temporarily blind you as well as anyone you point it at.

Just wondering how many lumens you guys feel is good for a light.

My HD AR has a Surefire M500 with a 600 lumen TNVC LED conversion head. The walls in my house are painted with flat paint. So not much reflection comes back on you. I can see where gloss would bounce back on you some.

I don't think any standard weapon light / handheld would be "to much".

I like having a light attached to my bedside gun(x300:170 lumens). If I have to go outside, I just grab the G2(led:80 lumens?) which is bright enough to illuminate my meager property lines.

Weapon mounted light: Under 200 lumens

Hand Held Light: 200 lumens and up

With my white walls, and since I keep my RDS units turned relatively low, I try and keep them under 200 lumens. Washing out with electronic sights is a bigger deal, and no matter how much I try and train it, transitioning from finding an obvious glowing red dot to using irons isn't as quick for me.

A lot of it has to do with how you're using the light. Constant-on isn't usually the best solution, so consider that as well.

You also have to consider how the flashlight projects, narrow or wide, Surefire makes diffusers for a reason.

"How many lumens. . .good for a light"?

For my particular use and familiarity with my environment (at home) it's:

WML = SF.X300

Handheld = SF.M6

With white-gloss paint on the majority of my condo, I found that anything more than 80 lumens gets a lot of splashback and is counterproductive. Outdoors, you need more, as my G2 with gen1 LED conversion doesn't illuminate very far. Indoors, it's more than enough to ID anything I need.

I use the Insight WX-150 150 lumen, with strobe. I've tested it with friends and it is blinding and disorienting both inside and at a decent distance outdoors.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Sxd8BGDVPU&feature=fvw

If someone breaks into my house and my bullets don't kill them, I want skin cancer too. I really want that 600lumen light from Fenix.

But for now I have a Surefire G2 on my AR, but it is getting swapped for a Fenix 5)10 that I have been using at work.
