I've had a PTR-32 for a while now (7.62x39 & AK mags) and I've had no issues with mine, other than it doesn't like surplus Yugo M67 which seems to be a common issue. With good quality ammo it's one of the most accurate rifles in 7.62x39 I have, easily beating my WASR & Draco AKs, and my VZ2008. If I get in to .308 I'd look hard at an HK clone.
My biggest complain is the weight of the barrel, it feels very nose heavy. Not my first choice if I had to carry it all day. As a range/fun gun it's great. Surplus parts are still cheap (although they won't stay that way forever) and it's easy to work on. Tough enough for serious use but for a grand there are a lot of other good choices as well.
No plans to upgrade mine, I'm gonna enjoy it as it is, a fine piece of military history. Even if it's a bastardized caliber.
