What are the specific differences between the two types of ammunition? What does the X signify? Is one superior to the other?
I know they're both 62 gr steel penetrator 5.56.

No specific difference. The X ammo may not have met a velocity min/max or something. But it can't all be rejected ammo. I mean... there's just too much of it available...
it's even in Walmart in some towns.
I still haven't heard a definitive answer about the federal XM ammo.
I dont think anyone knows.
If it bothers you, then look for IMI or Privi or PMC X-Tac first.
Ill buy whats cheapest (IMI right now)
where is the cheapest place to buy the imi right now?
Wideners
The M193 is like $0.28/rd delivered to PA
the M855 is $0.30/rd delivered I think
Not tryin to call you out but I couldnt find any ammo to my house at .30 everything I found close to that did not include shipping.
No. Sorry I was looking at federal m855.
FWIW, here's what Federal's website says about their XM193:
http://www.federalpremium.com/resources/xm193.aspxQuote:
• XM193 product is first run, first quality product manufactured at Lake City Army Ammunition Plant for Federal Cartridge and is made to Federal specifications typical for commercial ammunition.
• All XM193 product is the same regardless of the sku or part number. (ie. XM193C is the same as XM193F, XM193CBP and etc…) The only difference is the package configuration.
I don't know if the same description applies to XM855.
My experience is the XM stuff is OK,
But the IMI is far and away, better ammo.
I had lots of blown primers with both XM855 and XM193.
None with the IMI M193 or any other 5.56 or 223 pressure loads in my rifle (loose Wylde chamber).
IMI has a lower flash signature and generally good appearance and lack of visual defects compared to XM.

This place usually is the place to beat price wise for xm193. 500 rnds $134.95 + $10 shipping. Super fast shipping; had it in 3 days.
If you reload this stuff sometimes has Lake City brass stamped without the nato mark but I have heard is is the same brass. My last order has the nato mark like all my x855.
Otherwise, I wait for Cabelas to put AE223 up for $5.49 a box
I think the key there is "commercial production".
Isn't there something with military M855 that has to have that black tar bullet sealant on it? Is that present on the XM ammunition? Could be minor nuances such as that being the difference? I never shot XM ammunition.
Case neck sealant is spec for M855. I know in the XM193 lots there's been ammo that didn't have sealant.
That only furthers the "chicken or the egg?" debate. Did it go X because of no sealant? Or did they not worry about the sealant because the ammo was being run for X?
With the wording as "for the commercial market" it seems it would be intended or purposeful to do it a certain way. It's not clear, just what it seems to me. Of all the rifle ammunition on the commercial market, I don't think any of it has bullet sealant on it.
The way it looks from what is stated on the site, it appears to be "on purpose" not to apply bullet sealant to the XM ammunition. But you're right, chicken or egg?
Some of the XM ammo has come fully sealed. But I tend to agree that they're making if for the commercial market.
Either that or they have a horrible ability to meet spec.
