    shortie

I am at the cross roads right now. Have an AAC in a 20" and am really thinking of cutting it down to 16" and having it rethreaded.

I bought a questionable looking 1964 made Savage 99 Featherweight in 243Win from a pawn shop. The crown had quite a bit of dinging and surface rust that mad it a questionable shooter but a decent bore.

I had my smith cut that barrel down to 16.5" and re-crowned it.

I cleaned up the metal finish with some Break Free and #0000 steel wool and refinished the stocks.

The little Savage 99 will throw a 1.25" group at 100yds with a cheapo Bushnell 3x9 scope and Wincehster Power Point ammo from Wal Mart. Good enough for my 100yd and shorter deer shots!

The little Savage is TONS more handy than it was with the long barrel. I think I paid maybe 350-400 bucks for the rifle.

So if you find a rifle you like with a longer barrel...have a smith cut it down. I did not lose any accuracy and in 243, it does not have much more recoil.

A short, handy rifle is more appealing to me these days and easier to tote around.
