    Remington 6-1/2 Primers

My buddy gave me 4K worth of Remington 6 1/2 primers. I want to load them for my .223/5.56 16" AR but I have found no loading data for them.

    What's the deal?

Are they safe to load then fire through the AR?

Looking at a few primer cross reference charts it's showing that 6-1/2's are equivalent to WSRs, CCI400s, and 205s.

NO, they are not safe in .223. They are meant for .22 Hornet level cartridges. i've been through this already. DON'T do it.

I can personally verify this, I have a ruined bolt because of my own ignorance. 6.5's are for Hornet class loads, 7.5's for .223/5.56 class loads.

I loaded 1k of those for plinking ammo. Primers pierce too easily even with light loads. They put an annoying dimple on the tip of the firing pin. Won't buy them again.

Quick question while we're on the subject..I have a couple thousand Rem. 7 1/2 "benchrest" primers..what's the difference between these and regular 7 1/2's? Safe to use in .223/5.56 loads?

PLEASE VERIFY THIS ON YOUR OWN, but I saw on a different forum where some folks use these for loading up .38 Special cartridges.

I bought a couple hundred when the last shortage was going on and did not read the (very) fine print til later. Then, I had 200 primers I could not do anything with.

Rem 7 1/2's are good to go. As for the difference if I'm not mistaken is a little harder cup and consistency of ignition properties.

I couldn't really find much on the difference. If I had to guess....better QC. Yes, they are good for .223/5.56.
