Best thing I did on my 336 was to take it apart and smooth the action. I followed the "DIY gunsmithing" instructions on MarlinOwners.com for fixing the notorious "Marlin Jam" (Letting in two), and sanded and polished only the surfaces recommended in the online guide. The gun runs smooth as butter now, has been 100% reliable, and gets compliments from everyone who shoots/cycles it.

I also recommend a Williams Firesight set (rear peep with fiber optic front post), since I personally can't stand the factory sight they put on the 336. These two things plus a big loop lever and maybe a stock ammo holder are all I would recommend. I personally don't find the Marlin to be accurate enough to warrant a scope (beyond maybe a 1x reflex for quicker target acq), but YMMV.

Just one question. What did Pappabear do and/or get done to his Marlin?
