At the moment, it seems there is no other option. If it was possible for my police trade-in 551 SWAT to have had a rail instead of diopters, I would have gotten the rail. If you want to run any optics whatsoever, the rail version is much much better. No cluttered view with the diopters.

Exactly. In fact I contemplated sending my LE trade in 551 to a smith to have the diopter rear sight housing removed and a Swiss rail welded, then refinish the upper and reinstall rubber dust covers.

There is one guy. He is in Virginia. Never used him but I know some who have and their experience was painfully slow. Honestly there is nothing special about Ilaflon. I have a rifle that needs refinishing and it will get phosphated and then Duracoat color matched with the lower.

Could always go old school with a see through mount that elevate optics above the diopters. Never been a problem for me. Of course I grew up shooting carry handle mounted optics on ARs.

How many here prefer RDS over diopters on the 553?

I'm about to close a deal on a diopter model, and now I'm having cold feet.

I strongly prefer my diopter model. The diopters a really good and I enjoy shooting with iron sights.

Swiss Sigs are a fun guns to me so the fraction of a second benefit of a red dot sight doesn't really matter.

I'd say it may largely depend on your eyes. I can't see close in, so iron sights are not an option any longer. I'm planning on mounting a Mepro M21 on mine as they work great for me on several other rifles. If I could use irons, I'd almost certainly go with the diopters.

It is so easy to add a B&T rail and then run a RDS I wouldn't dream of doing anything else.

Think I may go with a railed version... simply can't find a diopter one in stock at similar prices.
