Is there a "scout rifle" option in 223?

    I was wondering....

I would like to build a rifle closer to the concept of the Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle but in 223...not 308.

I know that finding a 223 boltgun that has a lerger mag than 5 rounds is probably moot but the size and configuration of the Ruger Gunsite is appealing. I can live without the 10 rounder if I have to.

Is there a quality 223 boltgun out there with a shorter barrel of 16-18 inches that could be converted into a nice Scout Rifle?

Maybe taking one of the M700 or M70 "youth" models and modding it out?

Just wondering.....I love the Scout Rifle concept but could really use it in 223 and not 308.

    Thanks,

Doesn't Steyr make an excellent scout rifle in .223? It's surprising to me how few bolt action scout style rifles in .223 exist out there.

How's the quality on those? I never think of Mossberg as a bolt action rifle company, but could be wrong there.

I beleive it's Sako that makes a detachable mag, youth/ladies model in .223 with iron sights. It didn't offer a LER scope mounting option, but it looked very interesting.

"Scout" models evoke specific imagery and features. Short, light, handy bolt guns are fairly plentiful and can be built up to different scout-rifle concepts if you're flexible. Rem 700s, Ruger M77s are my favorites but others work as well.

I should have stated....no Steyr or Sakos.

I have a mortgage and kids to put through school and do not have Trump's wallet! LOL

A rifle well under a grand, please. Guns for regular 99% working folks.

Why wouldn't a youth 20 inch rem 700. I think it would. Maybe a tikka. That scout dealio only has the box mag that makes it different for the most part. Tikka would be pretty close. It has detach box mag.

You could get a an aftermarket detach mag box for the remmy but that is $$$$

Yep...I am thinking a 700 Rem Youth 20" 223 and I can place that in the stock of my choice and add optics.

Ought to give me what I want and not really break the bank.

I trust the M700, as I have one in 270Win and am used to the action. Honestly, I have never owned a Ruger or Mossberg bolt gun.
