A 223 will do a thowie. It's just not optimal.

I've heard of succesful engagements with MK12s out to ~1100, and this guy has made repeated hits at a mile.

I agree it's doable, but the shooter better have good gear and his shit wired tight.

I think we can agree that of the two, the 308 would be a better choice at that range.

If I was building a precision rig, I'd go with the White Oak or the MK12 barrel from Douglass, which is turned down by Compass Lake if I'm not mistaken. High Caliber Sales and Centurion Arms both have the exact barrel. I know Centurion offers a 16" version and I'd imagine HCS does as well.

This would be a dedicated precision AR. If I wanted a general use rifle that would reach out to those distances with somewhat repeatable accuracy, I'd go with a somewhat lighter profile stainless barrel, the 16" as I mentioned above or even a CHF Centurion or Noveske 16" barrel.

These are just the ones that would fit my needs, maybe not everyone else's. Right now, my 14.5" BCM CHF rifle with an ACOG TA31 or my SCAR H fill the somewhat longer range role, even with a 700 in 308, 50bmg and a 338 Lapua in the safe. I rarely have any use for those rifles and I have a few thousand acres for personal use. It seemed like a good idea at the time though! I'd recommend sticking to 5.56.

    Good luck in your search.
Proven combat techniques may not be flashy and may require a bit more physical effort on the part of the shooter. Further, they may not win competition matches, but they will help ensure your survival in a shooting or gunfight on the street. ~ Paul Howe

Absolutely. In fact... if I was shooting a lot of 1000 yard shots, I'd just step up to a 300 Win Mag.

There's days when even the 308 is killing us in the wind at 700 yards. I'll just put that joker down and grab Pappabear's 300 and HAMMER that joker.

I went with the 20" WOA (built by someone here on this forum) and mounted a Nikon P223 and bipod. I am dead on at 500+ yards as a few coyotes can testify too. I dare say I could reach out further but haven't had any targets yet.
