To answer your question - you are straddling a powder speed range with your requested bullet weights in 223/308. CFE223 would probably be one of your best bets. Varget and/or TAC could also do this for you. I would just embrace the fact that you may need to get two different powders for a 55 gr 223 load vs a 168 gr 308 load. Even if the load works on paper, there are many other considerations to loading beyond just looking at a load guide.

The good thing about this is that reloading supplies are slowly becoming available, and you will hopefully have your choice of supplies soon. Good luck!

In 223/308, I have used H335, Varget, IMR 4895, and IMR 4064. All provided good to excellent results as long as they were paired with the correct weight bullet.

Its funny no one mentioned 748 or BLC2 for both the 5.56 and 7.62, they were the old standby powders. They are high on the list using Quickload for load density and burn time.

My Google-foo is weak this morning, but I can swear that I read within the last month on one of the various reloading forums that Varget's kernels have been shortened "for uniform measuring." This is the best I can come up with this morning:

    http://www.hodgdon.com/extreme.html

The first of Hodgdon's revolutionary Extreme Extruded Powders, VARGET features small extruded grains for uniform metering, insensitivity to hot/cold temperatures and higher energy for improved velocities over other powders in its burning speed class. Easy ignition and clean burning characterize other features that translate into superb accuracy, higher scores and more clean, one shot kills. The perfect powder for competitive Match shooting 223 Remington and Heavy bullets. Outstanding performance and velocity can be obtained in such popular cartridges as the 223 Remington, 22-250 Remington, 308 Winchester, 30-06, 375 H&H and many more. Available in 1 lb. & 8 lb. containers.
    Hang up and drive.

    I think I used to use 748,
    now TAC for both.

I am a long term minimize powders vs. maximize each recipe per round.

    Example-
    Pistol-
    9mm 115 grain5.0 Bullseye
    .40 180 grain 5.0 Bullseye
    .45 230 grain "
    .357 158 grain lead "

I've been happy with IMR 8208 XBR using 69 gr .223 bullets and with lighter 30.06 bullets. I haven't had a chance to try other weights.

I just looked through my old book,
I think the most versatile powder I played with for rifle was Winchester 760.

    I could load .225 Winchester, 5.56, .308, 30-06, and 300WM with it.
I had data for 30-30 and .303 British but never loaded any.

IIRC, it was a ball that metered well.
Not sure why I stopped using it.

    YMMV.

Varget or aa2520, which has generally been much easier to find.
