The MT6400 and MT6400R both use the same standard 16" barrels that the regular 6920 and 6940 use. I believe in previous years Colt didn't thread the muzzle on ban state guns, instead using a muzzle break the slipped over the end of the barrel. The brakes where then held on with a cross pin.
At Shot Show this year Colt showed off their new MT6400R, which now has a pinned Rogers Super Stock in place of the M4 stock, and comes with a Troy Medieval brake, which I assume also means they are now threading the ends of the barrels and permanently attaching them them to maintain compliance. I don't know if they are planning to do the same with the regular 6400 model..
Not looking to beleaguer the point but when I bought a couple of these years ago I recall it being emphasized that the permanent nature of the installed brake made all the difference and that it was indeed a 14.5" barrel. Maybe I am crossing with a similar model Bushmaster but at the time I was positive mine were the same.
I check it out thoroughly before posting again.
Edit: Looks like there is no doubt that the current MT6400 is a 16" as some of you wisely stated and the Bushmaster, a similar concept I considered back then, does have the 14.5" and perm Izzy comp to 16.1".
