This is not good at all. If you own anything like this, please be advised.

Would have been interested to learn from the article what safes were engineered correctly.

What 99.9999% of the population thinks is a "safe" is actually nothing more than a RSC (residential security container).

Even the real deal uber expensive safes can be cracked by those who know that they are doing. Like the old saying says "locks are there to keep honest people out".

As for children, education is paramount.

Oh and for the love of all that is holy will these "safe" makers quit putting digital number pads on everything. Rant off for now . . .

Years ago my ccw class instructor said the only things kids couldn't get into were the 5 button simplex ones. He said the they would leave them in a room alone and they would somehow break into damn near everything else.

    Pretty much.

The reason I never shot anyone as a kid is because I knew quite a bit about the guns "I" owned and how to handle them correctly.
It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.

    Chuck, we miss ya man.

I'm so glad I don't own a safe sometimes. Waste of goddamn money.

Words of wisdom I plucked from a poster on another forum: "When it comes to keeping your guns secure at home, concealment trumps cover every time."

Not entirely, at the least some of the better RSCs offer fire protection. Bear in mind burglars are not the only threat to your firearms. If it is amateur night and you did your part by installing your RSC correctly then the would be robbers will give up in frustration and not risk the time it takes to “crack” it. Most thieves are looking for a “smash and grab” easy score. But don’t be fooled as there are pros out there.

Safes of even poor quality provide something. In over 23 years of copping and about 6 as an investigator I've been to many dozens of residential burglaries. Hiding guns in the primary residence is a roll of the dice. Even a locker will work with the most common, smash and grabs that we see most often. I've been to several scenes where the perps just lifted and took a sentry type safe, drilling it all out later. As far as real pros actually gaining entry to a "gun safe" like many of us have, if they know what they're doing they will. Fortunately they are very rare around my area. I've got 2 safes and both have 5/8's anchors holding them to the floor.

On another note fire safes in my opinion rarely protect anything. along with the cop thing I spent 17 years on a volunteer fire department and have never responded to a fully engulfed structure that the contents of the safe were not destroyed or damaged severely.
