I believe the 5.11 stuff is made of the same VTAC design are made overseas.
I'm just the opposite. I used both and prefer the VTAC.
Currently the sling is being sold by VTAC, Troy Industries, and 5.11.
The 5.11 nylon is softer and the buckles are plastic. The Troy version is the "updgraded" version.
I got the multicam version from SKD this week, and it has the plastic hardware and stiffer webbing than the 5.11 version.
Truthfully, I prefer the plastic hardware to the metal as it doesn't ding and clank against the gun.
Having both, I prefer the VCAS. I use the G&R padded model.
The VTAC is nice for simply carrying the gun; sinches in tight, material is smoother/more comfortable, more adjustability.
However: I have found that under stress in times drills, finding the little pull lever (that ends up near your arm pit) is hard to find quickly. In addition, the smoother fabric will also fray as well as get caught in magazines (if you use a chest rig).
I would also like to try the SOB sling, but it appears it is only meant for the rear to be attached to the stock, which isn't how I use my sling.
