This news broke here in Germany about two years ago, and Visier magazine (the preeminent shooting mags over here) conducted a comprehensive shooting test on them last year. There were some minor wear problems at the 3,000 round mark, but nothing too serious -- and this is wholly consistent with the characteristics of the originals. Quality is sky high, and accuracy/shootability were generally quite good.

The problem, as observed elsewhere, is the price. Since these are essentially hand-built, they are already prohibitively expensive by German standards, and given the exchange rate right now, that puts them in "nice used car" territory for those of us on the US Dollar. I'm glad they brought the StG back, but I probably won't ever own one.

I have a buddy who has a real MP-40. Very fun to shoot and very easy to control.

Not sure where your buddy is finding rounds for his Sherman but my friend has no ammo issues.

My advice (as a Sturmgewehr owner) is if you even DREAM that someday you would like one you need to jump all over the semi auto Stg - they have never been offered before and history has told us repeatedly that offerings like this do not last

The Sturmgewehr is my single favorite weapon - the coolest of the cool - and even though I have one (pictured here on M4C) I am in line for one of the I.O. guns - actually one of the very first in line

Don't hesitate if you are considering it

    Cheers

I had the pleasure of shooting LAV's full-auto variant at a class (thanks Larry) and it is a definitive example that the Germans were wwwaaaayyyy ahead of their time in weapons development.

Aren't genuine NFA versions around $12k? I can't see paying $4k for a semi-auto repro, but if you can, great!

    Uh....keep going.

The cheapest I've seen was a trashed re-weld and it was $15K.

Quality rewats are $18~$19K, and C&R's are more than that....

True enough: correct StG's have always been on the high end of the price spectrum, even prior to 1986. Back when nice Colt M-16A1s were going for $2,000 to $2,500, and registered receiver HK MP-5s were $3,000 to $3,500, original un-cut Sturmgewehrs were still a real bargain at anything under $7,500. Obviously, that's a situation that has only grown worse over time.

Fast forward to today. The problem with the new semi rifle, as stated earlier, is that the current exchange rate is absolutely killing us, and what was a pricey weapon to start with (by our standards, anyway) has only grown more costly as the Dollar has utterly tanked against the Euro. It's a real shame, too, because our window of opportunity (in a legal sense) may well be closed before most of us can gather enough cash to even make a bid for ownership.
