Cop uses IPSC reload in a gunfight, somehow dosent get killed!

We had a very interesting insight from a retired NCO and 20 year LE veteran at our recent agency class. When discussing reloads, Aaron is a big proponent of the speed reload. It gets the gun back up to full capacity quickly and if the partial magazine is needed, it can be retrieved in whatever time you have available.
This is very contrary to most LE training over the past decade where we are taught to retain partial magazines in case that ammunition is needed later. Unfortunately, this leads to very slow tactical reloads which are liable to be fumbled under stress.
Our experienced vet spoke up and told us about his last Officer Involved Shooting (OIS) he was involved in. He said he did a speed load before he and other Officers advanced on a subject they had just been engaged in a gunfight with. Later he was asked how many rounds he had fired. He guessed about 4-5, when in fact it was 14. The magazine he had dumped on the ground had only one round left in it.
It was an excellent tactical move on his part and put him in a position where he could effectively re-engage the suspect if he still presented a deadly threat. He was able to quickly gas up the gun and move while they still had the tactical advantage. There is no better way to validate your theories than through the testimony of real life veterans!

Nice. I think a fresh mag is always good. Even if that involves leaving a couple rounds on the ground in a dumped mag.

Yep tactical reloads are very over rated.

We teach both tactical reloads and speed reloads at work. No one has ever performed a tactical reload during a firefight.

I know a few cops who are trained to drop mags so that investigators know where they reloaded.

Not saying its good or bad.

Paul Howe on speed and tactical reloads. Bottom line, learn to do both and use what is appropriate for the situation at hand.

A tac load on the street is for when the shooting is over. Otherwise it's slide lock when you realize you fired more than you thought, or speed load when you think it's prudent.

Not in my experience. I am coming from the Mil side of the house, of course, but we teach both techniques and also stress when to employ each technique.

We primarily use tac reloads as a means to ensure we have ammo before taking decisive action:

-Before bounding during fire and movment, during gear check, it the weapon needs to be topped off
-Before room clearing, if weapon needs to be topped off

Nothing like the sound of a weapon going "click", when you are expecting a "bang".
It's not about surviving, it's about winning!
