I went back to the LGS today. I shot my Yugo M57 Tokarev for the first time. It was amazingly accurate. When I was done I went around to the other side of the shop to see if the Valmet M62/S was still there. Sure enough, it was. I asked the owner what the story was on it. He said that his father (former owner) had bought it from a guy about ten years ago who was the original owner and he thinks never fired it. His father never fired it and passed away about five years ago. He said that they just kept it in the safe until they put it out for sale (about a year ago). I told him that I was interested, but the price was too high. He didn't say anything. I then asked if he could take it apart. He took it apart and I examined everything that I could. It appears unfired. I then asked him if he'd take $2,600. He called someone and then said that he take $2,600+tax cash which worked out to $2,756. It seemed like a fair deal to me given what everyone has said here, so I went to the bank, got the money, and paid him.

ETA: I did find the serial number on the rear sight assembly.

    Rear Sight

Six Digit Serial Number (last three blacked out)

    Valmet Brand Marking

    Import Marking

Some things that I find interesting are that the bolt is in the white, the gas piston appears blued, and none of the parts other than the receiver have serial numbers. Having looked it over some more, it definitely appears that the rifle has not been fired. The finish is excellent with just very few minor scratch marks. There is also a little bit of discoloration to the finish in spots where it appears that oil or grease dried up.

I'd like to thank everyone here for their input regarding this rifle. I simply wouldn't have spent that kind of money without knowing what I learned here. I'm pretty sure everything is original. However, if you see something that doesn't look "correct", please let me know.

    Congrats.

You just got the 2nd best deal on an early Valmet import I've seen in the last few years. The other guy I know got his for 2k even with a sling and bayonet.

That is a supernice gun. Are you sure the bolt isn't chrome lined?

It looks more like unfinished steel than chrome plating. I don't think they would chrome plate the bolt given that the barrel isn't chrome plated.

Congratulations. You got a hell of a deal.

Nice to hear particularly during a period when so many have assumed the ankle-grab for pretty much any black rifle they buy. Rare indeed to get a gem like that, and at the price you did.

Thanks guys. I put it on my wall last night, right below my Galil (Springfield import). I'll definitely shoot it, but will keep it looking new.

You own a rifle I don't have but is on my list. Not an easy thing to do.

    Congrats.

I hate you so much, right now.

RK 62 (M62/S) in 7.62x39 with the later style grip, fixed tube stock and cheesegrater forearm
RK 62 76 (M76) in 7.62x39 with later style grip, fixed tube stock and later style forearm, limited use, less than 50 M76's were imported and very few of these were fixed tube guns
RK 56 (bet you guys with Bakelite Chinese type 56's and NHM-91's never thought you had genuine FDF service rifles, lol, rather than adopt the RK 95, the FDF bought a bunch of chicom guns for their less-than-special forces)

Most early FDF guns were upgraded to the M76 style handguard over their service life.

There were several other FDF guns that never made it here.

RK 54 and RK 54 TP, milled 7.62x39 soviet AK's, either fixed stock or underfolder
RK 60, the rifle that preceded the RK 62, no trigger guard, several other different features
RK 62 (sako) in 7.62x39 with tube attached with a galil style receiver crosspin
RK 62 TP (sako) in 7.62x39 with a galil style folding mechanism that had a tube stock instead of a FN style stock, these style folders are found on some milled 308 Valmet imports, limited use
RK 62 krinkov style prototype variant, limited use
RK 71 in 7.62x39, tube stock, limited use
RK 71 TP in 7.62x39, underfolder, limited use
RK 90, 92, 95, last generation FDF rifles, never put into full production, limited use

I know they imported a folding tube stock model in 5.56, did they ever import a folding tube stock model in 7.62?
