Thank you for your input. I guess I'll keep the barrel because it's not like I am that good at pistol shooting where I could gain an advantage.
As far as going the MEUSOC route, perhaps I'll just do some homage to it externally and cosmetically. Worse comes to worse, I'll stick some griptape on the front strap.
*Here is the thing I that got me really curious---modern "good" 1911s are all hand fitted to exacting tolerances and things like that, whereas the old school fighting guns of our grandfathers were loose and rattly.
Are the good tight modern guns still as reliable?

Absolutely. However, they do require regular maintenance. Gotta treat it like a Ferrari, and not a lawnmower.
That's also a large reason why custom smiths charge so much for their work. They build their guns to nut-squeezing tightness, but they're still very reliable.
