Doesn't matter. All lowers should be the same (slight variations between manufacturers). They're interchangable. No "carbine" or "rifle" length.
There ARE differences in stocks/buffer systems, but that's based on personal preference and local law.
You can use either. Rifle extensions, springs, and buffer are designed for use with fixed stocks, such as the A1, A2, or Magpul MOE rifle stock. Carbine receiver extensions (hopefully in mil-spec size and construction,) springs, and buffers of various weights are used with collapsible stocks.

If you can find one, I'd give the Vltor A5 buffer system a shot.
May God have mercy upon my enemies, because I won't.
Gentlemen,
Thank you for your assistance. I am just beginning to get heavy into ARs as my focus for years has been AKs. I have a rather large collection of AK's, Russian and Bulgarian extraction mainly and the majority being 5.45 calibre.
My experience with the AR(M-16a1) was mainly my tour in RVN, 1969-1970.
