I did, however, separate the lower -- it made the magwell a whole lot easier to work on, and I avoided showering the BCG with bits of metal.
I defer to M4C's resident 'smiths for their expertise, and YMMV.
If I had a S&W lower and it wouldn't accept a PMAG, I'd modify the lower too. Then I would touch it up with Birchwood Casey aluminum black. But with the fine nozzle on my airbrush I could easily spray just the modified edge of the lower with black Norrels and you would have to look very close to see that it had been 'modificated'.
