1963 or earlier original slickside Colt hard chromed Bolt Carrier (used on the Colt Model 601) - 9.5oz
2014 Precision Firearms Phalanx Black Nitride Bolt Carrier - 9.5oz

All my other ones are pretty standard, except one Young's slickside chrome carrier.

So if I understand this correctly, the light weight carriers/buffers are primarily for competition shooting where split times and mitigating recoil are more critical?
But for proven feeding and extraction under dirty environments (while disregarding recoil impulse) then heavier carriers/buffers are preferred while not causing short stroking?

Or is that simply a too simplified rule of thumb?

In my opinion, that's an accurate rule of thumb.
