Once the corn was in you could cultivate those fields for great varieties of small crops and still retain some great fields of fire. Shooters on top of a silo during harvest and miles of Zombie proof tangle foot from old barbed wire would make things pretty secure. Finding a cache of burnable coal and a corn bio fuel source would be easier than what they are dealing with now.
The extra from your fuel source could make corn squeezings for barter.
You could never stockpile enough ammo to defend yourself from a group similar to the Saviors who would take 80% of your harvest and coal in tribute.

According to the current story, apparently it can't be done anyway.
You know, people might get all froggy at first, but they wont be making any new Kerlix, Tourniquets, Morphine or Penicillin.
You likely wont need to see too many people die from stepping on a rusty nail or some bad child birth before dreaming of running through a hail of bullets is the fantasy it really truly is.
I know it's a drama, but a few people might think becoming the modern version of a Hun is the way to go, I would imagine it's a bit more glorious than hoeing weeds, but the learning curve might be really precarious.

If we had to use TWD's own rules....killing Negan would be simple.

They have a known area that they likely don't leave. Start dragging them out farthervand farther. His soldiers are likely not so much battle hardened, but bullies. The farther they go, the more risk and peril. It's out of Sun Tzu.

If you lead them far enough, they will get too thin or encounter a larger force willing to expend effort.

A small group is easier to move than a large one. Like how LRRPs would try to rope a dope company strength troops.

Meanwhile, as they stretch their army....

Sappers and mortarmen on their base. It is a known location now.

It is easier to attack than defend. Plus it will demoralize his group.

He only has so many guns, bullets, and people. The Hierarchy isn't prone to leadership should Negan fall. He rules through fear rather than respect.

Mao and Castro did more with less than what Rick has.

They killed a bunch of Saviors.

Lets say he has 300 people. Of those 300, only 150 get to be soldiers in their class system. Of that 150 that is gas, weapons, ammo, and varying degrees of skillset.

So 150 stay to defend their base. Once the mortars fly and the sappers start blowing holes; then they get to deal with walkers after half their army is....lessay
...50 miles out. Leading them to DC or Baltimore would subject them to loss.

Negan is no tactician. He has Charisma and projects the Alpha male biker image but his hubris is easily exploited.

Beyond that.....what's the point anyways? No cure, no government, and no cessation of aggression.

Surely there's a few ham radios somewhere. Surely there are ships, subs, or hell, other countries unaffected. Possibly governments in exile.

Or maybe I'm overthinking a show past its prime.

Still.....Seeing Yar's Revenge on Primetine was a treat

Very true, drag them out far enough that attrition will kill them on the trip home.
In the mean time something as simple as a Roman era Catapult will eat them up back home with a little fire in the clay baskets you fling.

Yeah! Maybe they could make some of that green "wildfire" like they used in "Game of Thrones"! Who wouldn't love to see Neegan catch a clay pot of green fire with his melon? Maggie would pull the lever on that catapult, of course.

    Now it has gotten stupid.

I wish it were more like Highschool of the Dead both anime and comic.

They have a little by-line about the Federal Response of other nations. Everybody goes into "Use it or Lose it" mode.

It had a lot of hard Right undertones past all the tits and gore.

TWD is just all, "Well.....we're here. Zombies!"
Did Highschool of the Dead ever release a second season? I loved that while it lasted

So yeah the writers are nose diving fast.

    Last two episodes blew.

Why didn't Eugene give the poison pills to the harem girls to kill Negan?

I guess they didn't want to end the season that soon.

If he figured them out so will Negan, if he hasn't already. Then Negan will come looking for someone with the ability to make those pills. Eugene is a coward, nothing new. Didn't want to chance it

Eugene learned from his mistake in making the bullet for Rosita.

Neagan has given Eugene a sense of, "importance" and he doesn't want to rock the boat...of course he's still a coward...
