    5.45 x 39 AR

I recently, against better advice, put together an AR in the 5.45x39 Commie caliber. Used all quality parts, some left over from other builds, and the gun went together very nicely. Oh boy, inexpensive ammo to shoot, hot dog. There was only one problem, MAGAZINES!!!!! After much shopping around and trying different makes, I thought it would be helpful to others if I made a list of the mags that functioned well. So, from my experience here is the list:

    Nobody!!!!

Thanks for your time and allowing me to complain. If some one with more knowledge says "don't do that" it's best to listen.

    Hey Gunz-
In the future, may I quote you on the C-Products mags? Ive been using them for years now..ZERO problems. People go apeshit over them, maybe a long time ago they had issues, but mine haven't for at least 4 years or more.

If it's my build, any help would be appreciated. I'm not sure that my build has anything to do with the rounds doing a nose dive in the mag. I've tried various makes of mags and one thing i've noticed is all the followers are almost identical. The front of the follower is 3/8" long and the rear is 7/8" long. the Magpul 5.56 follower is 11/8" both front and back. The 5.45 followers are not self leveling or anti tilt, also the springs seem to be a little on the week side. Also I noticed that the feed lips do not seem to hold the rounds securely in the mag when near full capacity, or maybe I've just got 6 or so "Friday" mags.
Oh, I almost forgot, I took the rifle to a 'smith I've used for the last 12 years to check the gun out. His conclusion " the gun is OK the mags suck".

You will notice I stated "maybe its your build"?. Since you left out all kinds of details its anyone's guess. Newer production mags from ASC are fine in 5.45. I don't use any of their other stuff as there is no need. Maybe you have older ones which many will acknowledge were problematic.

You'll also notice aside from your magazine rant, you actually never described the type(s) of malfunctions either.

The rifle will fire 3 or 4 rounds then the top round will not feed because it will nose dive in the magazine. This is common in all the different mags. I also noticed that that mags feed lips do not hold the rounds secure in the mag when near capacity, this seems to be mainly true on the right side of the mag. The round on that side comes up at an angle the causes the BCG to not be able to feed it into the chamber. I know there is nothing wrong with the build (not my first build) because on the rare occasions that the rifle does feed properly there are no indications of any problems. I've, as a precaution, taken the rifle to a gunsmith and had him check the gun and my build, Because who knows , maybe I did do something wrong.Wouldn't be the first time. I had him also check the head space just to make sure that was OK. That leaves only the mags, and since the rounds are not making it into the chamber, I don't know what else it could be.

I recently bought a magazine from MWG, their 30rd IK-510 polymer AR15 model, I bought it for my 5.56 Adcor Bear Elite. I loaded it with 28 rounds of 5.45x39 and have fired 120 rounds though my 5.45 build and have not had any problems at all. I took the mag apart and the follower is their own design and it does not allow the rounds to tilt down into the mag. It also has a "substantial" spring.

I'm glad that your mags work for you guys, but they don't work for me. I have at least a dozen ASC, C products and D H Defense mag for my regular ARs and the all function fine. I was hoping for the same results for the 5.45 but it just ain't happening.

So as I recall, ASC purchases C-products. Notice I have not mentioned anything about C-products. The magazines I have are made by ASC. Have you contacted them and addressed the issue?

Again- you seem to be defensive about your build. I am not saying your build is the issue.
