    Question about 22 Rifle

Hey, guys, question on a matter of law and old lever action 22LR

The rifle is from 1929, buddy of mine bought it a gun show a year ago and discovered the other day, he says, that it looks like the serial number at some point was altered/changed. I have not seen the rifle, so can't confirm.

His question to me was is he in legal trouble even for possessing the rifle at this point and what could he do/should he do if he feels now the rifle has an altered serial number.

Thanks for any information you can share.

It's illegal to knowingly own a firearm that has had the serial number removed or defaced...as in felonious.

But before 1968, not all firearms had to have a serial number in the first place...those which never had them are fine. If it had one in the first place, and now doesn't...it is in fact a big deal unless your friend does something with it.

Competent gunsmiths can usually find the serial number...because stamping doesn't just indent the surface. I'd contact this guy, http://www.turnbullmfg.com

I also know that there is/was? an ATF program where they'd take possession of the firearm, and if their labs could find the serial number, they would restore it, and if they couldn't they'd either assign a new one or keep the gun. You'd risk losing it(provided the program even exists anymore,) but wouldn't find yourself in trouble. I'd probably contact Turnbull and a lawyer first though...because it's not good.

The chances of it ever becoming a problem in the future are very slim, but the consequences if it does are serious.

I believe this is the program, though it's my understanding that only law enforcement can initiate it...so it would require you or the shop to contact them...sketchy IMO. http://www.atf.gov/files/forms/downl...f-f-3312-1.pdf

The ATF helping does and can happen though. http://www.shootingillustrated.com/i...tfe-compliant/

Thanks for your response, I've passed it along, with appreciation expressed from my buddy.
