Considering Surefire X400 Ultra with Red Laser

I recently completed the build on my first SBR and wanted to get a laser on it, but the high-price of the dedicated IR and Laser systems is something I'm not too keen on, particularly since I do not have any IR gear. I am looking closely at the Surefire X400 Ultra with the red laser to run on my SBR. My favorite place to mount my Surefire X300 is just in front of my VFG at the 6 position on the rifle. I'm thinking that the X400 with laser may be right for my purposes and I welcome any input others may have. My SBR is my primary training rifle and my primary home defense weapon and I'm building it out to be the most versatile fighting gun as possible.

I have run a similar set up in the past, though I was running a full length AR and a TLR2s than the X400, but same concept and light located at the 6 O clock position. Personal thoughts... It isn't that great of a set up. The offset of the laser to bore doesn't give it too much utility to me since I found issues with it at longer ranges (Was running an ACOG so you could pretty easily see the dot at extended ranges and it was really not much good past the 100 meter mark.) Also the TLR2 and X400 both hang farther than the none laser counterparts and I found mine hanging up on things more often than not on my gear. Also was not a fan of the way the bore shadowed at the 6 o clock position. Then again running them at other positions has issues as well so you are kind of stuck with the 6 position for best usability.

Now, I do find laser to be fun, if not as useful to myself as some find them. Will be honest, if I could find a good priced low profile laser that hugged a rail and was easy to use with a pressure switch and took CR123s then I would likely buy one to play with, maybe mount it at the 9 o clock opposite my Scout light.

I appreciate your input. I wish I could afford the $$$ to buy one of the high-end consumer versions of the mil spec laser systems, but as I said, the $$$ is prohibitive and since I don't do IR, I feel I'd be wasting quite a lot of money on an option I will probably never be able to use, unless I hit the lottery and can sink thousands into top notch night vision goggles, etc.

The only concern I have is the one you identified, the height under bore axis of the laser on the X400 Ultra. I suppose one must simply compensate for that, but it looks to be a good two inches once I get the light on the rail. The reason I want to run it at a 6 is because I like to keep everything "in line" with the rifle, etc and I find it very easy to manipulate the flashlights controls when it is directly in front of my VFG, etc.

Are you running an RDS or irons only?
If you can't win a gun fight against a lightly-trained individual during broad daylight with 88 rounds of 30-06, I'm not sure you'd be able to do it with... any other firearm.

Ok, I've got an El Camino full of rampage here, so what's the plan?

I just picked up a Crimson Trace Railmaster Pro with the green laser. While I haven't really been a fan of lasers, the pro had an aluminum body and the laser happened to be included, so I'm trying it out. I was going to put it on am M&P9c as a carry gun, but I have also been thinking about it's use on a carbine in the 12 o'clock position. If you really want a laser on your rifle, I think with it mounted in front of your front sight the laser should work pretty well out to 200+ yards, as long as you can see it, plus it has a light you could use as a back-up if needed.

Thread resurrection, has anyone run this setup at 12 oclock with a 1.93 optic mount? Does it fully clear the fov?

An X400 at 12 will block your irons. You are better off with an A3 or ATPIAL

I don't really care for irons. A 1.93 mount will block them anyway. The laser is my primary at night, the RDS is secondary.

I run mine offset at about 10 o'clock with an Arisaka KeyMod section and a Geissele MK4 rail. I am using an RDS and irons and it blocked the irons. I am unsure about the 1.93 mount and optic.

Yeah, i long ago took my irons off for the same reason. Laser at night (generally), and optic is day. I use the super tall KAC High NVG mount with an extra spacer, i love it
