As before, I am greatly appreciative of Mr. Hackathorn's insights and advice, and for M4C for distributing the information.

It is this type of seasoned, expert advice, not the flashy, latest-trend fads, that I seek out. I appreciate Mr. Hackathorn's bluntness, too; there's no sense in sugarcoating truths in the gun community, and those who get butt-hurt over that deserve it. Straightforward, no BS information based on experience--reminds me of a senior DI I had in the Corps.

I especially appreciate the advice about not sitting down to train, remembering cover is as often on the left as on the right, accuracy, and about mag dumps.

    Ken Hackathorn's Take
Sage wisdom from the grandfather of the gun industry: PART 4

Part IV touches upon magazines...not gun rags. There's not much more to say about magazines at this point. They have come a long way in both the aluminum and polymer versions for the AR. However, they do wear out and spares should be kept on hand. Due to the political climate everyone should also take this opportunity to buy 'em cheap and stack 'em deep.

It would be great if Mr. Hackathorn would elaborate a bit more upon his comment in regards to long term storage of loaded mags. I'm not trying to question his wisdom, only looking for clarification.

    LAV On Training: Part 1

Another newsletter was released, and this time around, LAV is sharing his thoughts. Basically, if you are going to modify your firearm, you had better shake it out on the range before trusting your life to it. Doing so in a structured class is even more better. It didn't take many words for LAV to convey his thoughts on this subject. Thanks for taking the time to share. This quote pretty much sums it up.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: you'll learn more about guns and shooting in one class than you could in a month on the Internet.

READ about guns, gear, and shooting on the Internet. LEARN about guns, gear, and shooting on the range during well thought out and useful training. This approach is proven and consistently produces results and shooter confidence.

Mr. Vickers' comments about firearm modifications and equipment selection before attending a class were on the mark.

I still get no email or alert on the news letter. I'd assume I'm not the only one.

    Jeff Gonzales: Part 1
    Red Dot Optics

RDS dot brightness can be an often overlooked aspect to shooting with a RDS. A RDS is a force multiplier if used correctly, but can be a distraction if not. I adjust my dot to be visible enough to to see in bright daylight, and it isn't as overpowering once I move into shaded areas. It should be noted to adjust brightness once given the chance if you move into or out of a structure. Excellent reminder about RDS brightness. Mr. Gonzales also touches upon positive target ID (responsibility for one's actions), following target to the ground (not letting up), and high percentage shots (first round lethal strikes). Good stuff from Mr. Gonzales. Thank you, sir, for taking the time.

    Larry Vickers:
    My Calculations

5000 students trained is quite the accomplishment. I am in that group. Good points to remember when taking your first class: Lube your weapon before class, Handgun skills may be the most important building block, 4 fundamental firearm safey rules, Be careful with your mods and verify function, Use quality ammo, Seek proper training, and one that I will add is to zero your weapon before class.

It was my pleasure Lav, please come back to North Texas.

As somebody whose grip occasionally causes failures to lock back, this was a good read. Jeff did a great job putting things into perspective.

    Larry Vickers:
    Pistol Sights

Shooters always need to remember what pistol sights are used for-to align the gun to the target. Expect to not be looking at them in a gunfight. Actually, you need to expect to be looking at the target (bad guy) and hopefully seeing the sights as you look thru, past, or beyond them. They can still assist you in aligning the gun to the target even if you are not focused on them specifically.....
