Just wanted to thank everybody again and bump this in case anyone else has more tips. Even though I'm now on staff we're stretched so thin that I'm once again tasked to be leading a 249/240 qual. One week out...

Sic semper tyrannis.
Just my experience of lugging an M249 around for a year and a half as an 0311. I would always save the plastic tab that started the belt on the 200rnd drums and use it to start shorter belts. Never had a first round "clunk" after that. Sample size of one.
A few lessons I've learned from running MG quals for a few years:
-wet guns run, dry ones don't. Keep a spray bottle of CLP on hand.
-Rotate barrels frequently. While they aren't firing cyclic for 2 minutes those barrels still heat up quite a bit. Change them out every few people.
-They aren't pushing forward enough...ever. They can always push forward more.
-off hand grip pressure is vital. If over the top, too much will cause the gun to drift outside, too little upwards spreads. Taco grip there is never too much pressure. Most people like this one. 2 hands on pistol grip works but is not recommended.
-move hips when changing targets. You can't get effective groups by just traversing with your upper body. You have to get you're whole body behind the gun with each target. Move the hips.
-when standing & kneeling open up the stance (SAW). This is not a peek out from behind cover weapon. Get a stable platform (try to replicate a tripod as much as possible) and then fire.
There's lots more but that is mostly specific to running a MG daily, not just a qual course. Hope this little bit helps.
We are writing the new SAW and 240 books now so if you need anything specific let me know
