Maybe I should have polled a Sig 320 compact and an HK VP9?
Maybe I should just get a Colt 1911 Combat Elite from Grant.

    - You have a Sig already and arguably one of, if not the best.
    - I'm not a fan of <5" 1911's or I'd say get the 1911, if you don't already have one.
    - So, with all of that said, I would give the VP9 a try, as it is a nice pistol.

Let's take a poll, What Say Ye M4C Masses?
I think these are all better ideas than a 229. Especially since you own a 226. I'm just not a huge fan of P229s after they started changing frames. Getting some mags that wouldn't fit my old P228 pissed me off, and I just don't see a reason for the change.

VP9 is a great gun, I've never shot a 320 so I can't say how they compare, I doubt you'd be disappointed with the HK.

If you really want an original SIG 228, then that is what you should buy. They pop up on Gunbroker occasionally. I almost bought one, but passed because of the difficulty of finding original SIG 13 round magazines. I ended-up buying an HK USP compact and have no regrets.
That said, if I should happen upon a clean 228 with 2-3 factory magazines I would buy it.

The original SIGs were great pistols.

    Something like this:http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...Item=477525456

That pistol looks very clean with almost no markings on the barrel hood.

I'm not sure if this is still the case, but back when I looked into Sig's direct purchase program for military and law enforcement, one of their reps told me that I could special order a P229 without a rail. I had a P228 already and didn't feel the need for a rail. I like the rail on the full-size P226 for HD, but I didn't care for the compact with rail either.

That was probably back in 2007 or so though, so they may have done away with that special order option.

I'd love to have an M11-A1, but the price is a pretty good jump from the $530 I paid for my P228 back in 2003.

    Isn't the new M-11 just a non-railed 9mm P229?

    Sure seems that way.

The REAL M-11s were sheet metal slide P228s...weren't they?

I'll take my West German P228 over anything from Cohen.

No kidding...I have W. German P225, P228 and P220 and all run like sewing machines. Even the P220 which is known to be a problem child.

Here is my 100% non-Cohen Sig collection. The 226 is the new build, all German 226 with the folded slide that they offered a few years ago. The 220, 225 and 228 are W. German.

The new M-11A1 is just typical marketing by Sig Exeter. Trying to make believe that it's a real "mil spec" M11, even though it's really just a prettied up 229.

Of the choices, I opted for the M11A1, but I wouldn't buy either, personally, ESPECIALLY if I had a P226 that was reliable. For me, the P228/9 fills no "need" in the Sig lineup - the grip (hardest part to conceal) is only SLIGHTLY shorter than the 226's grip, and gives up a chunk of capacity (2 rounds with OEM magazines, 3 rounds with flush fit MecGars). I dearly loved my original M11 (folded slide), but the solid slide of the P229 makes the pistol feel "dead" in my hand - no balance to speak of. The P226, on the other hand, with the solid slide balances and "points" very nicely.

This seems like a preference thing, I don't think you could really say one is better or worse than the other.
