    I don't think they are wire wheel marks, mine have the same marks and they look to be machining marks to me.

    Wire wheel wouldn't leave that type of mark. Certainly not that uniformly. Those appear to be tool marks. For what reason I don't know, but I don't manufacture carriers either.

    My guess would be that the F was punched too hard and the raised area from the deep punch mark was taken down with a mill or a rotary file.
