The IR illuminator is the best feature of a MFAL device. Out of all the "real deal" lasers, the PEQ-2 has the best illuminator. It unfocuses wider than the ATPIAL & DBAL and is a perfect circle instead an oblong shape. The civilian ATPIAL has a very weak IR flood. You're probably better off with the DBAL-D2, even though it's big and heavy. The LED IR illuminator is actually usable at distance on that unit.

The PEQ-2 should serve you well. Don't bother with the LBS and grid paper when you zero it. If you have a NV compatible RDS, mount your NOD behind it and co-align the laser with the RDS. Should get you very close, but always confirm zero by firing a few rounds and make adjustments as needed.

The DBAL I2 Has the same illuminator as the A3 and is only $780. I like the PEQ but for $500 less I can like the DBAL more. With that said I still need at least 200 yards of illum

Ah, I see the confusion. We're actually both right! There's two models:

Soooo...how is the IR illum? According to TNVC the A3 and I2 have the same illuminator.
