AR NOOB - Here's what I got (so far)

After decades of shotguns, rifles, and pistols, I've just purchased my first AR! Did lots of research ahead, and just picked it up yesterday and looking forward to shooting it.

    DD M4V11 Pro
    (18”, Geissele SD3G Trigger)

    Added the following:
    Aimpoint Pro
    MBUS Pro Sights
Streamlight TLR-1S (didn't like, too bulky especially when using a picatinny add-on rail... sold it and will use a barrel light (streamlight, fenix, etc) with a DD 1" keymod offset mount instead)
    Magpul Angled Foregrip (MAG414)
Seekins Pic/KM rails (5 slot and 13 slot)
    UTG 360 bipod

I don’t want to spend to much on a high end optic right now, so I picked up a Nikon P-223 3-9x40mm (and Warne ultra-high mounts) to plink around with for now. I'll see if I need that level of magnification for my usage. If not, I'll save for a Leupold VX-R 1.25-4 firedot later. What do you guys think? How much mag do I need to get a consistent <3" group at 500yd, after some practice? Do I need more than 4x?

I’m now deep into ammo research, but ultimately I'll just have to try some. Bought a bulk case of Fed Lake City XM855 green tips (62gr steel core) so I'll start with that. Hoping that this mil reject stuff isn't crap - have heard it should be ok. If anyone has any suggestions on good/accurate 62gr (or even 55gr) 5.56 that is available in bulk (500-1000+) I’d love to hear from you! Primary use is 100-600yd target practice, so I’ll even consider .223.

Looks like a heck of a first purchase.

Not too sure on the UTG bipod; they don't have a great reputation overall. That might limit your groups, if it has any wobble. That's a free floating foregrip, right? The gun should be good to your distance.

XM855 is a 4MOA-ish ammunition. So don't expect great groups at 300+ yards. The 77gr OTM rounds get good reviews (IMI, Black Hills, CBC, etc), but every gun is a bit different. I'd suggest something NOT in the SS109 category. For example:

There are lots of folks on here with better info than me, but those are things I'd glance, with my limited knowledge of distance precision shooting.

Damn, I wish I'd seen those links before! I saw a great price ($380/1000) on the XM855 so I went for it. I was thinking that sale wouldn't last long after the unfortunate events here in CA last week.

The UTG bipod has some adjustments to tighten it up, but I guess I'll see how it works out. I'll tell you this much, its a heavy bastard.

UTG is better known for Airsoft quality equipment at best. That said, however, their new bipod has been receiving some very positive reviews as far as features, build quality and sturdiness. At the end of the day it's a bipod, so as long as it does what it's supposed to do you'll be okay. Otherwise it looks like you're off to a great start. For the record I don't like those Daniel Defense butt stocks at all, so that would be the first thing I'd change out if it were my gun. Good luck and enjoy the ride.

3" at 500.. Better commision high quality bolt gun with a $2,500 scope and feed it the best ammo that can be built. At that range with that rifle shooting 855 consider yourself good if you can hit a Volkswagen! You said you did a lot of research but I am not sure where you did it. Slow down, take a deep breath and tell us what you really want to do with this rifle?

    I missed that part.

An AR that shoots 1 MOA is still shooting 5 inch groups at 500 yards.I'm not sure any DD could do the group you're asking.

Are you sure you can shoot that far? Reading wind, bullet drop, etc?

    I have a standard V11 that I regularly get hits on a 2/3 idpa plate at 600...

OP, great rifle! Slow down, define a goal for your rifle, and then worry about optics and accessories.

In my opinion you couldn't have started with a better rifle, I own multiple DD rifles and all exceed my expectations every time I shoot!

Looks like you got a really nice rifle. Just a few observations/recommendations/questions:

    1. When it comes to the bipod and AFG, I would pick one and ditch the other.
    2. Have you already ditched the Aimpoint?
    3. I had this ammo recommended to me by a moderator here and was rather impressed with it's accuracy (for a bulk 55 gr round)

I was also in a Pat McNamara class recently and he just so happened to be using this ammo as well and he was also impressed with its accuracy.
    4. I don't think that rifle will give you the groups you're talking about, and even if it will IMO you will need considerably more than 4x to get there.
