Is it even worth it to try or would the end result be too pricey to justify a project with that goal?
I think it would be around $900 to $1,200. But they have already built rifles in that price range (DPMS, Bushy, S&W).

I was really looking into AKs for reliability and ammo cost but the more I learn about them they aren't really a budget gun at all for a good one. It's just hard to swallow thinking about spending the same if not more for an AK than I did my AR. That's what has led me to look into the .308 realm it's just twice the price to shoot it!
People will bitch about everything. The only actual turd that Arsenal put out was the 5.56 106 model.

The reasons for the prices is because it's getting harder to bring in good quality parts kits. Since 2005 even the barrels on parts kits have to be cut up and most US made barrels are junk. People want authentic and original so this is what you get. Or you can buy one of the turds Century slaps together.

Are they any good? I'm pretty leery of DPMS and Bushmaster due to the rep of their 5.56 guns. S&W, from what I gather, makes a "decent" AR, but I know relatively little about their .308 model.

Why do you want a neutered one?

Unless you live in a ban state I've never heard of people wanting an AK that had been modified to look like that. MAK 90 stands for (M)odified (AK) 1990. It was a ban because an AK with a pistol grip and a muzzle break or flash hider was not considered sporting so the only way to import them was to neuter them..... make a butt hole stock and machine off the barrel threads.

Is it safe to presume that PTR-91 is good to go these days?

So wouldn't I just have to get a break pinned on if I wanted it?

Technically you can shoot it as is. But you would need a pistol grip w/screw, stock, muzzle device and then you may or may not want to play with the 922r law.
