I had an A3 that I sold. In my opinion the longer rail of the A3 is still too short to mount meaningful iron sights. I know others have done it; this is just my personal opinion.

My opinion is the same as JoshNC. The longer rail doesn't have enough length to add iron sights. I will add that in my experience with the A3, the longer rail does add considerably to the weight of the weapon. My rifle was sold off. It was just too heavy for me to use effectively. My carried an ELCAN which made it worse. I'm not 6'5" and 280#. If I were I probably would not care about weight. I'm more like 5'9" and 185#. Ounces = pounds.

My advice to anyone interested in a AUG is buy one. Take it out shooting put about 1000 rounds through it then decide if you want to keep it or not. If you decide to sell it you will not lose much if any money and it will be a good experience.

I owned a STG556 for a while and put several thousand rounds through it. I never could get used to the dong. I sold it and with the money built an AR15 rifle and pistol. If I could find a rail/hand guard I would consider buying an another Aug I still have a ton of mags. It could easily replace the AR pistol.

    Sam,

This may come off as a dumb question, but I'll ask away anyway. I'm looking at these both on two online retailers, the price is just about $1700. In the descriptions it says it comes with a short rail. Now is there another configuration available with a longer rail? Or is this short rail the one option available?

I also saw two weights listed with one being 8.9 pounds with optic, or 7.5 pounds with short dot. Is short dot the factory 1.5x that you were mentioning?

ETA: Does $1700 sound reasonable with short dot included? Whatever that exactly means, I'm just a little confused with the different configurations.

    Thanks

Thank you very much for this.

I've been tempted by these before, and I almost jumped on one of the close-out deals CDNN was putting on the A3's before the M1 version was released. I keep eying these on Bud's, but their product descriptions leave a lot to be desired and I would never order one unless I knew for sure which variant I was getting.

    w3453l,
As Dushan mentioned there are a few different configurations of these rifles. And remember whatever version you purchase, you can also purchase a long or short rail. These rails and optics can be swapped out. I wouldn't really care much about the color either as you can swap stocks just as easily. Not like some of the other bullpups out there. A NATO stock would be a great option to have too. I have both and a lot of magazines for each.

My new AUG A3 M1 with the factory 1.5x optic cost me right at $2000 at my LGS. My Tavor, a Geiselle trigger module and some accessories were sold off to buy it. I also sold the ELCAN SpecterDR that was on it to buy a Steyr .308 Scout rifle. Funds from the sale of an Aimpoint T1 on a LaRue mount and some AR accessories purchased the Leupold VX-R Patrol riflescope for the Scout. I really wanted to wait for the MDR but we've been waiting 2+ years already.

Whatever you decide, get one you will not be disappointed! I use a SilencerCo Blast Shield on my SilerncerCo ASR Flash Hider on the AUG. it runs great!

    Thanks again Sam.

A couple more questions if you don't mind. You stated you sold your rifle due to weight making it inoperable; this was the older A3 correct?

On your current M1, do you have the short or high rail? Does the short or high rail have any effect on what optic can be used (1.5x or 3x)?

Have you tried using the "piggy back" reflex sight over the factory optic? I haven't seen this in any pictures and it makes me think the height of the reflex sight would be a bit awkward.

How do you like the foregrip? Is it sturdy or is it something that's better to have replaced with an aftermarket one from Magpul or BCM?

Thanks again, I'm reading the whole thread over again on LF. Lot of reading, but it's good info.

Yes, it was an A3 with the Sabre Defence receiver. It wasn't inoperable. It was just too heavy to use effectively, especially with the ELCAN sight. The A3 rail adds a lot of metal to the AUG design. The ELCAN was 1.5lbs. You can see what kind of weight that adds.

My current A3 M1 does not have a rail. It has the integrated 1.5lb optic. I believe it is made by Meopta. You can get the AUG with the short rail, the long rail or the integrated 1.5x and 3x optics. The optics can be swapped for a rail. The receiver has 4 screws that mount either the optic or the rail. At some point, I would like to buy the long rail. I hope that explains it a little better.

I have not used a reflex sight on it yet. The Zeiss Z-Plex sight goes for $600 or I would have one already. I have some stuff for sale, so I may get one.

Personally, I like the AUG foregrip. I would not replace it.

    I hope this helps!
