Supermarket shelves in Venezuela are chronically bare, and power shortages are so severe that government offices are now open only two days a week. The health care system has collapsed, the crime rate is one of the world’s worst, and inflation is rapidly eroding what remains ofthe currency’s value.
“The economy has gone from bad to worse to horrific,” said Jason Marczak, director of the Latin America Economic Growth Initiative at the Adrienne Arsht Latin America Center, part of the Atlantic Council, a Washington-based research organization. “The Venezuelan government is doing a good job of leading itself into chaos.”
Here are some basic questions and answers on how Venezuela got to this point under President Nicolás Maduro and what could happen next.

CARACAS, Venezuela — President Nicolás Maduro was chased at a routine political event by a crowd of angry protesters banging on pots and yelling that they were hungry, just days after thousands of Venezuelans took to the streets to call for his ouster, local news media reported on Saturday.
Scenes from the confrontation late Friday, which also appeared in videos uploaded to social media, captured the attention of Venezuelans, many of whom blame the unpopular president for the country’s food shortages.
In one video, Mr. Maduro tries to calm the pot-bangers by walking among them, only to be surrounded as the furious crowd yells obscenities.
Now they have turned over control of food production to the Military.

(AFP) - Venezuela named publicly 18 military commanders to oversee the production and distribution of food and basic goods in an effort to alleviate severe shortages affecting the country.Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino
Cara Lopez selected the military personnel for the "Great Mission of Sovereign Supply and Security," appointments formalized in the state newspaper.
"We will have thorough, precise control of the strategic areas," Padrino Lopez told journalists Saturday.
A State Department Warning to Americans

The Department of State warns U.S. citizens that violent crime in Venezuela is pervasive, both in the capital Caracas and throughout the country. Security restrictions on U.S. government personnel may restrict the services the Embassy can provide.
Venezuela has one of the world's highest crime rates and, according to the non-governmental organization Venezuelan Violence Observatory, has the second highest homicide rate. Violent crime - including murder, armed robbery, kidnapping, and carjacking - is endemic throughout the country.

Wasn't he one of TIME's 100 most influential people a few years ago?
Why do the loudest do the least?
Maybe, but so was Hitler at one time.
I guess if influential means having an ability to flush an entire Country along with it's economy and most likely it's money making natural resource Oil, all down the crapper at once, well, yeah, that's influence.
That he should meet the same end as Benito Mussolini might be too good for him.

Sounds like Venezuela is about to become the Somalia of the Americas.

Not sure why this is a shock. It's been ongoing for a while. I read elsewhere from someone who had dealings in Venezuela said that their problems were created by manipulation from the Russians, Chinese and Iranians and bad business.

This has been an on-going thing for quite some time now, ever since Chavez took ill. The people of Venezuela started starving, but nobody cared, their eyes fixed on Syria and Iraq.
The rolling blackouts and shortages aren't limited to the government, they've also impacted healthcare. Infant mortality is through the roof, hospital infection rates are high, and doctors are writing prescriptions that pharmacists are having to find creative ways of filling (including providing drugs that are similar to those prescribed, but not the exact drug).
Inflation is so bad that people have to use cards to pay for things because they cannot safely carry around the amount of cash needed to pay for necessities. Farmer's markets - which are illegal - practically cannot function if the farmer's do not bring a card reader.
According to the Venezuelan government, nothing's wrong, though. Even though foreign relief agencies and NGOs are chomping at the bit to bring antibiotics, food, and other basic needs, the Venezuelans are turning them away at the border: Nothing to see here, let them eat cake.
What's most impressive to me is that the Venezuelan people have not yet decided to start hanging the ruling class. It will be interesting to see how bad things get there before they decide to burn shit down.
