I use a sharp punch to start and finish it off with a rounded tip one I made. Took one of the punches in the set and ground it to rounded tip. Best way I can describe it is it's more rounded than the Apple pen. Square's cool though. I recall IG talking about a tool in the works. Haven't seen anything about it posted since. I've been contemplating grinding a chisel flat and cutting away the sides to leave a point. I'm thinking one sharp side to get started and a dull side to flip over to finish.

I filed down a punch so it has a rectangular head, works well.

I've used one of those little stubby straight blade screwdrivers and it made a nice rectangular indent.

It has been mentioned before that I should come out with a tool for this-- but I find the automatic center punch so adequate-plus, and so many other tools that need makin', that I just never seem to get around to it.

Colt has quite a setup for this and definitely gets the "best staking" trophy.

I have found many receiver plates to be inexplicably and unnecessarily hard. When they are the right stuff the auto-punch nicely. My recommendation would be use only the Starrett; other brands never seem to do the job as well or last as long.

Could you provide a link or some more specifics on the automatic center punch? I feel like I've been living on Mars, but I'm not familiar with this. I've always just used a center punch and a good whack (but not on AR's).

Starrett 18A is what I use, and it replicates the LMT staking: http://www.mcmaster.com/#3422a1/=146gxmu

All you do is position the tip where you want the stake and press down firmly. It compresses and then punches the location where the tip rests.

I got my auto center punch at harbor freight. Works well.

Here is another option to staking that I have been using for awhile, it works just fine and can be used with all milspec receiver extensions.
