45 ACP all the way.
IMHO, it's all about how each, gun is made. I know lots of 9mm, 38 Supers that run flawlessly, and I've known of one Wilson, and two STI (all $2000 Plus) 1911s that had to go back to the manufacturer to be fixed.
45. what the gun is made for. now, if the gun is made right, they can all be just as "reliable".
The old faithfully and proven .45 acp
The two most reliable calibers are 38 super and 45acp. The other calibers can be made to run well, but they will never get to the level of reliability you can expect from a well made 45 or 38.

Find what it is in life that you do not do well......and do not do that thing....
I've had a 1911 in .45, 9mm and .38 super auto. I still have the .38 super. All were reliable but the most thoroughly tested of all of them is the .38 super. Two 2000 round tests, no cleaning or extra lube. The first one with mostly factory ammo. The second with mostly handloads. No breakage or jams, a few failures to go into battery all due to two Checkmate 10 round mags. I don't torture it but I don't shield it from dust or dirt either.
If I ever get another 1911 it will be a .45 or .38 super. Thanks!
