    New to AK-47s: Romanian SAR-1

I have always had AR-15 type rifles. Never had an AK, except for the Saiga 12 and VEPR 12.

I traded for a Romanian SAR-1. It has a threaded barrel, I think. My friend put a Tapco trigger into it.

So what type of muzzle break or flash suppressor do you recommend?

There is a scope mount on the side, what type of mount do you recommend for stability?

So I read these are only good for 5000 rounds? How do I get the barrel changed at the end of its life. Are there aftermarket barrel replacements?

    Thank you for any advice.

Your barrel should last far longer than 5000 rounds. The rommy barrels are CHF and chrome lined. They hold up well.

Check out griffin armament for ak muzzle devices and RS regulate for scope mount. There are other ways to mount a scope on the AK but I think that the side rail is still the best option unless you absolutely need a folding stock.

My SAR 1, and all of them as far as I know, came denuded with no bayonet mount and a non-threaded barrel.

The threading part is easy enough to do your self, and instructions/tools can be found via a search. I threaded and put a standard AK slant brake on mine.

The SAR-1s are a great AK and in my opinion are far better than what is being imported now. I have always been a fan of the Smith Vortex flash hider. They do not use index pin that most AK muzzle devices use. I also would ditch the cleaning rod. Between ditching the cleaning rod and the smith you eliminate the rattly stuff on the barrel. I like the Ultimak with an Aimpoint as far as optics go.

I had a SAR 1 approximately 15 years ago. Mine did not have a threaded muzzle as most did not. I know a few had a welded muzzle nut so maybe you got lucky. People use to bad mouth the SAR in the early 2000's but it really is one of the closest things you can currently get to a service grade military issued AK. I have a Damage Industries AK ported brake. It is fairly short, affordable and works great to try out a brake on an AK. Have fun, David

5k is too low to worry about a CHF/CL barrel from a military factory. I recommend RS Regulate mounts. As for flash hiders I prefer 3 prong type; Echo93, Griffin, and AAC now has one. I personally don't like comps/brakes, but Griffin and PWS make solid ones. There doesn't appear to be any threads from what I see.

    That's a solid AKM. Enjoy.

Are you sure you have a threaded barrel? My SAR-1 does not. If it is check out the Manticore Arms NightShroud.

For a side mount go with an RS Regulate, another option is the Ultimak gas tube mount.

I replace my wood stock with an East German wire folder because I wanted something streamlined.

As said above 5000 rounds is nothing.

I looked back at it, and it is not. I misheard my friend. We were standing in a parking lot, and I was making sure that I was listening to everything around us. We were dealing in a public parking lot.

Unless you kill it with corrosive ammo and severe neglect, the barrel is the last thing you will need to replace on that rifle. You also don't want to replace the barrel, it's costly, involved and there isn't a US made barrel that I can think of that will be as well made as the one you have.
