The lower itself is steel. the plastic portion is more of a shroud. On the 7.62x39 version it can be removed and a normal galil pistol grip can be installed(although you would lack a trigger guard). Somoe people have riveted the original galil mag release and trigger guard on as well. This picture shows the set up well:

Here is a picture of a modified galil ace with a classic galil trigger guard and mag release installed:

On the 7.62NATO variant this plastic shroud retains the magazine and is therefore needed to function.

I dunno....I'd actually sooner get a SCAR. And I'm not really into SCARs.

I do like the 17 but can't get around the fact that the plastic hing area will eventually crack. It's not a design flaw, it's just the nature of a lightweight rifle shooting a heavy round. Dropping that type of money and then having to buy a Handle Defense aluminum hing is a turn off. I have a LMT MWS and the Galil uses the same mags pretty much sold me on the Galil.

The Galil looks like an interesting rifle but if I were to buy a 7.62NATO rifle which mounts scopes to the dust cover I would probably buy a FAL.

That said I do like my Galil ace 7.62x39. It also runs well with my Dead Air Sandman S, and many don't like suppressors. In that caliber it has a lot of offer over legacy systems IMO.

There are a lot of options in the battle rifle realm these days. That is good.

They make SR-25 lowers for it and that stock fix thing. I'm not really yay SCARS as I have an ECC but If I had to pick between the Galil and the SCAR.....SCAR.

The MAC video just made it seem unattractive to me. Not even intentionally.

I get you, I routinely check their site because the SCAR 17 really does interests me but just don't see the point. I'm on he lookout for a new ACC myself too.

I'm really enjoying mine. It's a smooth, low recoil shooter with the OEM brake on it. (Full disclosure-I've been a forum member for years but I now work for the co. that makes the rail-mounted accessory seen here).

Alien Armor RailGuard on OEM rails. (Full disclosure-I've been a forum member for years but I now work for the co. that makes the part in question).
