Does anyone make a Slug that is better than Buck for HD?

We don't need to get into how great 8-9 pellets are over a single entry wound. I have had to carry 2 different model shotguns into harms way and know a wee bit about them.

I am having to train up on a shotgun again for harms way and not just hunting or 3-Gun which is how I usually deploy a shotgun these days. Is there a slug that performs with the terminal effect & urban safety that tactical 556 rounds do... a slug that will "penetrate and expand in tissue" and "not zoom thru multiple buildings"???

I never seem to read anything about shotgun slugs as for anything other than for hard targets or 75+ yd shots.

If I wanted a slug for HD does anyone make one that is good to go?

Here's a product I can only recommend for you to look into: https://www.iccammo.com/collections/...ug-5-round-box

It's a 3/4 ounce frangible shotgun slug and may be an answer to your wants/needs. While I've shot these slugs years ago, I have no experience on penetration information. As I recall, they did group lower than a 1 oz. lead slug and not as tightly at 50 yards.

OP: Winchester Defender Segmented Slug is designed to elimination overpenetration by breaking into 3 segments. Never shot them myself, you might want to take a closer look.

I just figured there had to be a decent jacketed or semi-jacketed hollow point type slug designed for LEO/HD use that penetrated adequately in bad guys and would expand and break up on hard surfaces like a TAP round of some sort. Thanks I'll keep looking!

Brenneke Tactical Home Defense slugs, perhaps?

A typical Foster slug (Federal, winchester, etc) will flatten out and come apart into three or four chunks in tissue, usually.

The further out you go and slower the slug the more likely it is just to mushroom at the front and penetrate more.

Brenneke-style (European-style) slugs are harder and penetrate much more than Fosters.

Just use standard (or high) velocity Foster-style slugs. Mind you if you shot doesn't encounter much or any tissue it will go through some things before stopping. (As will pistol bullets or an expanding .223 round that doesn't expand)

I've contemplated the same thing myself.

The newest JHP-style slugs (Such as Hornady SST) I've seen are all for rifled slug barrels only. (or you won't get any accuracy after a very short distance)

This is exactly what I was looking for... it doesn't appear to function like I imagined (a hollow point), but evidently has the same effect and designed to stop in hardened material... I know it ain't magic, but its intended design features are what I am looking for... I will try and get some over the holidays and test them against my preferred Fosters (Rem Slugger 2 3/4) and any other similarly designed. Thanks everyone!

I don't see where the HD Brenneke is any different than the standard Brenneke.

This looks to be fairly effective, but is way expensive:

    This.

    Federal LE127RS penetrates under 15 inches in bare gelatin and flattens out like a pancake;

IMO, no need to look any further if minimum penetration and maximum expansion are what you're looking for in a shotgun slug.
