That's the only way I've heard the "bird shot acts like a slug" myth explained. I've never heard someone say firing bird shot alone, it always involved cut shells.

Oh. I've heard a few people talking straight birdshot like shown in OP.

So a cut shell fired from 2" will have the same effect on gel as one fired from 20'? Fire up the video camera.

Dear sweet jeebus, you people are obstinate. The "same effect"? Maybe not, but it's not going to magically triple its penetration. The reason bird shot doesn't penetrate adequately is that its mass to surface area ratio is extremely low.

Yes as individual pellets. As a solid mass? You seem to be getting bent out of shape by my comment. Your post is on the myth of bird shot acting like a slug. As I stated above, I have never heard that in any other form than a cut shell. So if you repeat your experiment with a cut shell and have a different result, maybe there is some truth to the myth.

I have heard this more than a few. Never heard anyone say use a cut shell with birdshot, always at close range it acts just like a slug.

as I once stated in another thread Ive been shot with bird shot. Considering it failed to make any marks except on exposed skin, and that was with number 5 or 6 high brass i dont see it having any use for home defense. Anyone saying itd be fine for a contact shot, I'm sorry I dont count coup before killling the mother****er trying to kill me.

This is not to say birdshot cannot kill. Ive seen results where the shootee was DRT. Blast to the face. Litrerally blew his face off. But, i suspect the cause of death was trauma and shock rather than 300 pellets bouncing around his skull. Simply put, there are better options out there and not all that expensive.

    Misspellings compliments of smart phone.

How far away from the muzzle were you when you were shot?
