What is the Proper Method for Installing Extractor Springs?

I recently installed a few extractor springs using a pair of smooth jawed Knipex pliers. It worked, but I was worried that it would mash the spring coils and damage them. IG has also mentioned this is a problem (of course, I read this after installing my springs).

Per the TM you are supposed to push down and turn the spring clockwise until it seats. Sometimes you will hear a small snap that let's you know it's in the pocket. I have a punch that I modified that fits at the top of the spring. I then use it to push the spring in, and turn it.

I came up with this when I was working at a certain company because it was much faster than the method that was being used. When you have to spring hundreds or thousands of extractors, you get creative.

Thanks IG. I tried turning the springs, but I couldn't get a good grip on them. I'm going to look into making a modified punch like you mentioned

I always just line them up and assemble the bolt and cycle it a few times. Snaps them in every time.
