    That's funny.

MIM isn't a bad thing but it is inferior to its alternatives and Springfield certainly isn't passing their manufacturing and production savings onto the consumer. I would get a Loaded model over a TRP any day of the week. Build quality wise they are both the same and only differ in some models in terms of features.

However, in the $1300-1500 range you can find a Dan Wesson which not only rivals, but in some cases even outperformed several of the "Semi-Custom Shop" 1911's. Unlike the TRP, the slide:frame, fire control parts, and barrel are actually hand fitted/adjusted. Dan Wesson parts are all CNC'd for an incredibly precise fit, but the critical areas I mentioned get even more attention. For that price point that fitting alone sets them light years ahead of their competitors. Additionally, they use no MIM parts whatsoever. Again, MIM parts aren't a bad thing (depending on who made them), but its nice that a relatively affordable 1911 like Dan Wesson didn't cut any corners.

If I you want to spend $1300 or less...go with a Colt Gold Cup or Springfield Loaded series. Willing to spend $1400-$1500, get a Dan Wesson; highest quality 1911 under $2200. However, depending on what you are looking for, I would suggest a Colt Rail Gun or the Colt Combat Unit Rail Gun (main difference in checkering). They can be had for around $1000 and $1300 respectively. Colt really does make a great 1911 and current versions of the Rail Gun are really nice and my number one recommendation for someone looking to get a nice mid-range 1911. Be advised, there are some parts that I would swap out immediately on the regular Rail Gun but they can be done by a total novice and its under $50-75 worth of parts. PM if you want to go that route.

A great site for all things 1911 is 1911addicts.com, that is where a lot of TOP 1911 smiths hang out and post. It's a really good group of guys and is basically the M4carbine.net of 1911's. Very friendly to beginners and a lot of the pros will chime in and help DIY'ers along with projects, great atmosphere. Stay away from the other 1911 site; fanboys, soap boxers, and wannabes.
Thanks for your opinion. I will have to check that site out. I wasn't considering DW as I wanted a us made gun. I looked at their site and they are some good looking pistols. For some reason I keep looking at the Colts, but wave been warming up to the Springfield too. None seem to have all the features I like. It will likely be 3-4 months before I have the cash save up, so a lot of time for research.

All Dan Wesson's are built in Norwich, NY. CZ-USA is just their parent company and is not involved with production whatsoever.

Only the TRP Operator has the bull barrel. The non railed have standard bushing barrel.

Also in the $1500 range is the Lipsey's Springfield Combat Operator. For $11-1200 I wouldn't over look Springfield MC Operator or Black Operator(formerly Long Beach)

Or buy you a MilSpec and have Springfield's Custom Shop fix it up your way when they start taking work again. I got around $1700 in mine with cost of gun and work.

    Colt

I have been collecting and shooting these ancient pistols since 1988. Not all brands, but a lot. Own $400 ones to $2,500 custom gunsmith built models. I didn't see or missed the purpose of your quest, but FWIW I rely on Colt for civilian defensive carry: Wiley Clapp Commander, or New Agent models.

This isn't the last 1911 decision you are going to make so keep that in mind.

+1 for the Combat Operator. I have the 9mm and 45acp, both are excellent pistols with a lot of features for that price point.

My 2012 made Colt government .38 super has been ..... Super! Modest modifications with the sights being the biggest expense. It just completed a 2000 round no lube or cleaning test with a handful of failure to go into battery as the only issues. All attributed to Checkmate 10 round magazines.
I've had a few Springfields too, I have zero now but all were high quality and Springfield's CS is outstanding.

It will be for range use. I am very used to a Sig's DA and Walthers for carry, so don't want to add a new manual of arms to the mix.
I really like the the idea of shooting such an iconic firearm.
I like the military pistols for the nostalgia, I have a correct 44 RR , but want something to shoot that is not a collectors piece. So a parked.gun would be ok if it's a replica or a gi rebuild. If not I am partial to a blued gun, like older colts etc, no rail and sights with white dots or tritium ( old eyes ). I was considering the Colt competition, but don't love the finish. I do like the Gold Cup, but not the bowmar sight ( just black )
Now that I know the DW is a US made gun I am more interested.
I am all over the place with ideas so it good I have time to think before the purchase.
