FWIW, Rob at AKOU ran one of his 5000 round tests on a PSA and it ended up doing pretty well.

I would say if you want something super basic and could part one of these kits together for less than $500, it might be worth trying.

Just keep in mind it is no Arsenal, Molot, etc...

As I have never been an AK head, but always wanted one, would it be worthwhile to try a PSA Parts kit when they come back around.

I saw them for around 350 this last pass without FCG, Stock Grip; essentially the furniture is all.
ETA: They're not in stock now, but what I am referencing: http://palmettostatearmory.com/blem-...16444672b.html

Never should see hard use, but don't want pure junk. Any thoughts?

    Pass.

If on a budget, look at WASRs and Yugos.

Prices will come down on the Arsenals. Wait if you can.

I'd wait to see reports regarding the quality before shelling out $$$.

What is that between the bolt and bolt carrier? It looks like a buttstock tang, but that should be attached.

Thanks for the advice, from all angles.

I will certainly heed all. I will give it some time to get some good reviews out there. I liked the AKOU video on it, but seeing as they're sold out, I might as well wait it out a bit and see where the AK market goes.

It's a platform that any gun guy has heard of, from stats, statistics, gunshop talk; but not one I have any true experiece with. Considering it's a parts kit, I will watch for the options you mentioned,WASR and Yugo, in my price range. Supposing I like it and get the AK Fever, then I can look into parts kits and the etc.

Nonetheless, thanks for the input, and for letting me hijack a thread here for 2.2 seconds and not get a bad reception.

Glad I nailed the SAR and MAK deals when they were good. It IS hard to pay more fro an AK than a Colt. Almost unpatriotic.

I don't think that is it but it might be. The tang is removable but it's for future upgrades enabling the rifle to be converted from a fixed stock to a side folder and I want to say even under folder configuration or so I thought I heard Robski say.

Video from PSA showing how to assemble their kit. At about 1:30 she removes the buttstock tang from the rifle. This leads me to believe it comes attached to the rifle and not part of their builder kits. I could be wrong.

You guys don't know how good you have it. Before 1989, and I swear to GOD only a few months before the ban when the Polytechs and Norincos rolled in, the ONLY AK option was the Steyr imported Maadi's and in 1984 they were selling for $1,200. The only rifles coming in at the time that were as cost prohibitive were FN FALs.

Glad I nabbed my Maddi AK imported by Century when they were $299. When KVar had Arsenals for $400 I grabbed a bunch of them.

I also grabbed a bunch of Century build AKs (Tantals, Yugos, Bulgys, etc.) simply because they were so cheap it was hard not to buy them. Then during the Great Obama Gun Sale of 2008 I sold all of my century receiver guns because they were selling for $2k and more. Also flipped all my HK clone guns and a few others.

Now that decent AKs are selling for $1000 or more I have no interest.

Stood in a pawn shop in Killeen back in the day. Crates of MAKs at $179 and SA 85Ms at $250. Wish I had bought a few at least. Did walk out with an SA.

Back in the early 80's, my first AK was a Hungarian folder that was my truck gun for years. It cost me a whopping $289 and was worth every penny. Wish that I hadn't sold it for a truck load of money years later during the ban years. At least we are getting some good AK rifles again. I'm trying to find another truck/Winter rifle. AKs are perfect for that.

That's exactly what I paid for my MAK-90. A friend and I went to a gun show and bought SA85M's for $239 each. The next week Klinton banned their importation. We went to another gun show the next weekend. The dealer we bought them from asked if we wanted to sell them back to him for $100 more than we paid. Nope.
